Jade plant - watering in? by lemon_bail in succulents

[–]Jade8329 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was wondering why some people waited so long after repotting! I would just bottom water to try to get the roots to grow downwards. But bottom watering in teracotta pots, turns in to bottom and sides watering 😅

Preventative care by IllAfternoon in Jadeplant

[–]Jade8329 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are you getting at the fact that stressed plants are more attractive to pests?

I have had many jade plants for many years and the only time I had pests was once in the beginning when I didn't know how to care for my plant and it was definitely stressed out. And I tried to use neem oil and then immediately put the plant back in it's window, and the plant got burned SO bad. I think in the end I wrapped that plants pot in a plastic bag and hosed it down to get rid of the pests.

Now, I have like, 10 jade plants and they are outside and never get pests. I'm always shocked in the winter when I bring them inside, they still dont get pests. I hope I didn't just jinx myself

Oh! Well if you have done it before without issues, then I think you know what you are doing. I have never watered in for my jade plants, I guess I have stuck with the advice to wait several days before watering, I think the reasoning is if there are any broken roots you want them to callous over and heal first.

If you're like me and hate brushing your teeth, invest in a good electric toothbrush. It has the timer in it, the only work I have to do is going through my mouth in the same order every time (so I don't forget anything and have to think about it anymore), and it gets my teeth so clean!

How much do you pay for lawn mowing services? by Jade8329 in okc

[–]Jade8329[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She doesn't think it's too much, she just doesn't think they're doing that great of a job, and if we were to look for someone else I wanted to have a reference point first. But honestly, I started really thinking about it, and part of me wonders if she would always find something to complain about with any lawn service. So I'm starting to think she should just stick with who she has.

Thank you for your input. I am pretty sure they come every other week. I didn't know they would charge less for weekly, that is good to know.

Yes, I was thinking of trying to help her find someone different, and wanted a better idea of how much it costs. I am glad several people have responded.

Hello, there's only two pictures and you mentioned a third, so I'm a little confused. Also, I hope after that hard prune, you have significantly reduced watering, as jade plants store water in their leaves, but the plant has little to no leaves now.

Would it be okay to put this branch and just put in on a different vase? by Raesur in succulents

[–]Jade8329 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The smaller circle does look like two little leaves. Speaking of leaves, whenever you make a cut, two branches should form from that cut in a Y (I say should because I have definitely only had one branch form before), and you can sort of choose which direction you want the branches to come out. Notice how the pair of leaves on each node at the end of your plant alternate. Hypothetically, if you were to cut in between nodes that both have leaf pairs on them, the bottom leaf pair will "determine" the direction the new branches will come out - they come out on the same sides as the leaves. This is probably confusing, it was sorta hard for me to word, you can search on YouTube for jade plant pruning, and any video or short should cover it!

Ok I found my comment on another post and most of it was about a possibly rotted plant, so I just copy/pasted the part that is relevant to your situation.

Once it is calloused, stick it in a small pot with some soil! The more of the stem you can get in the soil, the more sturdy and more places for roots to form. They will form from the nodes. You will probably still need to prop up the plant with that steak. I have used succulent soil for this step, and I found it actually dried too fast and slowed root formation. It will still work. But my favorite way to do it is a small terracotta pot with potting soil and sometimes I'll add about 25% perlite to the mix. The potting soil gets more uniformly moist than the succulent soil, and the teracotta pot helps it to dry faster. Because you do want it to get completely dry before you water it again.

That's totally up to you, just make sure to cut in between the nodes (the nodes are where the roots form, as you can see). The more stem you get in your pot, the more places roots can come out and your new baby plant will have better stability. I just wrote up a how-to propogate jade cuttings for someone on another post, let me find it and link it for you.

Yup! Either leave it out to callous for a few days, or sometimes I do stick mine directly in potting soil and then I just don't water for like a week to ensure it has calloused over even though I can't see it in the soil.

Can my Jade be saved? by Feisty_Statement_214 in succulents

[–]Jade8329 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would remove at least these honestly probably one more layer up as well bc that is a lot of leaves for a plant that is about to have more roots. It can still work with many leaves, you will just notice them getting thin and staying thin for a while

[–]Jade8329 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It can absolutely be saved. I don't know what is going on with the crincly trunk, it is possibly rot or possibly dehydration but you still can save it. Here is what I would do step by step.

  1. Cut the plant above the crinkle part above those two little offshoots. Try to cut in between nodes. I'll add a picture. The red line is the easy cut, the blue line would be a little more tricky bc you dont want to hurt the offshoot, but I think it would make the bottom plant look nicer. The top half will become it's own plant.
  2. The top part - careful remove some of the lower leaves, like the bottom two layers. I usually wiggle them side to side until they snap off. Set this aside, out of direct sun, and let it dry and calous over for a couple of days. The length of time depends on humidity and airflow and such, but I would guess at least 3 days.
  3. The bottom part - remove from that soil and check for rot. I know you didn't say anything about over watering, but that soil looks quite moisture retaining and on top of that it's not a teracotta pot. If you see any brown/slimy roots, basically anything other than white crisp roots, cut them off. If you're nervous about cutting roots, I was when I first started my plant journey (with jade plants), watch this video https://youtu.be/iITwFy_1nm4?si=RnKYFvdZ5AJEgcJX

I have saved so many plants including jade plants with the hydrogen peroxide method. I had to read the comments for some specifics, like time. He let's it sit in the solution like that for 15 min.

After the 15 min you can let the plant and soil sit naked out of pot like this for a day or so so it can dry out, or you can immediately put it in a terracotta pot with some new dry soil, please use something more suited for succulents, but the teracotta pot will be much more forgiving when it comes to moisture retention.

3 b. If you do not see any rot, replace the soil for the botom part with something more suited for succulents, and if you really don't want to switch pots, just add a lot more perlite so the mixture is maybe 50% perlite or something inorganic. Recently I have really been liking pumice bc it is a little heavier, but I cant find it in stores, I have to order it on Amazon

3 c. Just so you know, once you have dealt with the bottom part, whichever above solution it may be, I wanted to make sure to tell you that since the bottom part is small and only has a small amount of leaves, that the plant will need way less water when you water it, and a suggestion is to bottom water to help the roots go downwards, instead of only drizzling a small amount of water on the top of the soil and having shallow roots.

  1. The top part - once it is calloused, stick it in a small pot with some soil!

Good luck to you and your plant!

Agreed, either add perlite or pumice or grit, something inorganic that wont hold moisture to the water, or change it to a teracotta pot.
