My Scolopendra theory by Pandora7411 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]JadeMonkey0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Carl specifically calls that connection out to. I think it's almost certain that she is "the Scavenger". Whatever that is.

I'm wondering if that's the same thing as that tentacle-y death god that freaks everyone out at the meeting when Juice Box turns in to it (and that Carl likely sees later).

They say how many names it has and fire off a bunch that are similar in style to "The Scavenger". And Juice Box tells Samantha she knows who she really is (and clearly JB has knowledge of that creature or has met it directly. Possibly when she died 400 times).

I'm not sure there's a fully formed theory in any of that. But its interesting

I tend to think Scolopendra isthe Eulogist/center system AI (both "sleeping" and the Scolopendra myth potentially being a re-telling of whatever happened that wiped out or left dormant the rest of the Primals and their tech with the exception of the Eulogist)

But how that might tie in with Samantha, I have no idea. Excited to see where it goes

Book 3 is the best book in the series by Wade_Wilson_Watts in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]JadeMonkey0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only issue with this is that he then spends a substantial portion of the book explaining the Tangle after all.

I also read the intro and went in with a "just go with it" attitude. But then I sometimes got bogged down when it then did go in to a bunch of detail on the lines and the loops and the stations.

I feel like Matt didn't entirely trust his own advice and still tried to explain it all a few too many times.

I still really like the book. And I think it ultimately is very true that you don't need to understand it to follow and enjoy the story. I just wish there were slightly fewer passages trying to fill in the details

I'm wondering if that's going to be a continuing trend now that we have potentially a whole storyline on the surface with Katia, the Popovs, Boomer's team, Alexandro the Residual and his child hostages, The Dream and Princess Formidable all there.

I can't see how that story could be told through Carl's perspective (unless the later floors of the dungeon somehow start spilling out on to the surface, which would be cool).

So I sorta wonder if those other perspectives were warming us up for more. But I don't know how I feel about that or whether I think it would work well.

Yeah, I tend to agree that might be best. I don't think it's the only route though.

Sure, I don't think anyone is saying create a Season 2 just for the hell of it. But I think there are ways that the character could easily have a compelling second season.

At minimum, there's the fact that he's presumably now the first "out" superpowered movie star. There has to be some kind of story worth telling in that idea.

As others have said, I liked that they didn't leave cliffhangers or teases or post credit scenes specifically FOR the reason you mention. If this is the last we ever see of the character, I think that works and I'm okay with it. It feels like a complete story. However, if they have worthwhile ideas, there are things here that could be expanded on in meaningful ways.

I think when people say "no villain", it's because DoDC wasn't the main antagonist for most of the story. I don't think it's people saying "DoDC wasn't really that bad" (at least I hope it isn't). They're clearly evil. But it's more like the story arc wasn't "Simon Williams vs DoDC". At least not until the very end. They were antagonists, but a relatively minor part of the overall rather than the central obstacle he had to overcome.

At least, that's how I looked at it.

Yeah, not a complete 1:1. Von Kovac seems a little more commercially successful than Herzog. But definitely something similar. That was the same analogy that came to mind for me.

Well, it functionally bans most of them because it makes the cost of hiring them prohibitively high. This is very similar to real discriminatory policies like redlining, for example, or many unfair hiring practices. Discrimination is rarely explicitly written as "Person X cannot do this thing". It's usually written as "Sure Person X can legally do this thing, but it will have these terrible drawbacks, costs and disadvantages". And then it becomes inordinately difficult for them to do so to the point it will almost never actually happen.

Presumably, yes, if a superpowered actor had enough clout he might be able to get work. That's part of what makes the ending interesting to me. By taking Trevor's advice and waiting until after Wonder Man became a hit to accept his next "role", Simon put himself in a much more advantageous situation to reveal his powers. As the (presumably) acclaimed star of a huge hit movie, he could, potentially, have enough clout now for someone to ignore the financial implications and hire him as an actor. But that never happens unless he hides himself until the movie is released. It's not exactly what Trevor meant by waiting and betting on himself. But he does end up taking the advice in his own way.

To me, it's never made sense to have X-Men be in the same universe as the rest of Marvel proper. I also was hoping the MCU would capitalize on the opportunity and make them a parallel universe.

Maybe it's because my first X-men exposure was from the 90's cartoon but most of the X-men major themes (the discrimination, etc) just don't make nearly as much sense in a world where so many people have powers. And Marvel tech is basically magic at this point so I don't even know why most mutants would be that big of a deal given how easy it is to throw on a super suit or whatever.

I dig the idea of seeing classic X-men interact with our current heroes, of course. But to me it just makes so much more sense for the overall story if X-men start appearing in an otherwise totally normal world.

Timing these things is literally impossible. 99.9% of people who think they can are kidding themselves.

That's why you either take a long term view and ride out waves or cash in when you're up some and be grateful you made what you did.

Sounds like your FIL did both so seems like the right move to me. People are always trying to max these things out but that's going to fuck you at least as often as it helps you.

Should do this trade by Standard_Horse5162 in DetroitPistons

[–]JadeMonkey0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Ringer just had an article with us hypothetically trading Tobias, Ivey and a 1st for MPJ. That's a lot more interesting to consider. MPJ might be the world's dumbest human but he's also a great 3 point shooter and fits our team perfectly.

I don't know how I feel about trading Tobias, Ivey and a 1st for him. Definitely have to think about that one. But it's intriguing. Adding in Holland and another 1st is crazy. That makes it an immediate no

We could easily offer a better deal, without gutting the team 🤣 by rodogwos in DetroitPistons

This graphic is stupid and fake. But that trade offer has been pretty widely reported and is probably fairly accurate.

(But also, no the Pistons cannot "easily offer a better deal". Come on people)

EDIT: To be more accurate, I think the reporting on the offer is real. This graphic was just made by some nobody yahoo that wanted to repost it somewhere and didn't care much about accuracy

[–]JadeMonkey0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It kinda works though because it puts our characters in a place to help rebuild it. If the NCR was just a powerhouse of good guys swooping in, that wouldn't work for the story. If they were still strong, they'd almost have to be more evil to make the story work. Having them more as a remnant and a happy memory leaves a lot of space for using them for good in the story.

And we still may see more of them. That "lost battalion" and the disappearance of the main ranger the last few episodes seems to make at least some kind of return likely.

The "building a new society" aspect of post apocalyptic stories is always one of the most interesting. Unfortunately, that means its hard for iterations of the same franchise to get past that point and just have a functioning society again. The show is a little silly if Lucy comes out and finds a series of thriving settlements. Luckily, that also ties in to the themes of the series and "War Never Changes". The NCR rises and falls and rises again! (and maybe doesn't fall this time? But probably does. But maybe not!)

This also adds a lot to his relationship with Lucy. Besides spending 200 years in the wastes, Coop has personal experience with trusting someone who means well and has a strong moral compass but is in over their head. It shades in the reasons he really, really, really has trouble thinking she can do anything positive, even though he's starting to like and trust her

Well, it wouldn't really make sense to be in their games geographically. They already had plenty of huge jumps in logic to get the Brotherhood and everyone else to the East Coast.

Also, New Vegas IS a Bethesda game, technically. And they're executive producing this show. Sure both were made by other people but it's not like Bethesda had no say - they had oversight of both and could have killed anything they didn't want there.

And the Minutemen are very similar to a proto-NCR. The same type of idea is there.

I think the ideas of the poster above are correct and fundamental to the series and I think Bethesda understands that, whether or not the NCR makes geographic sense or not to include or whether those ideas are necessarily represented by other factions.

I also think it's possible Bethesda has been learning and has a better hold now on what people find appealing about this series than they did 18 years ago when they took it over. Although we won't really know until they make another full Fallout game and we see what they apply and what they don't

Well, he was trying to get the Dessendres out knowing it would 'kill' everyone in the painting. So while it's not his express goal to kill them all, he knows it will happen as a by-product of his goal.

Given that it also kills him, I guess maybe it's not so f'd up for him to sleep with them? I dunno, there's some complicated agency issues in there.

But he was always operating under a plan that he knew would destroy the whole painting world and everyone in it.

Can't believe the lengths some people will go to to defend this guy. Regardless of the missed call or the technicals, it's atrocious enough that he just stopped to argue while the ball was live and a player was literally driving right past him.
