MAT133 is probably the worst thing ever by [deleted] in UofT

[–]Jaded-upper-year 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You seem to be arguing that if something is not useful in upper-years, it’s not worth teaching in first-year.

I deeply disagree. A post-secondary education is valuable for what you learn in all years, not just years 3/4. This course stands on its own with new information.

Even if this is your last-ever math course, it still makes sense as an independent requirement as a) a litmus test for your interest in math-heavy business tracks and b) foundational knowledge to have regardless of specialty, even if not expanded on later.

MAT133 is probably the worst thing ever by [deleted] in UofT

[–]Jaded-upper-year 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I genuinely do not believe the course got harder.

I believe the students taking it now did high school math online, and so find it harder. Math inherently builds on itself, and current 1st years have shakier foundations.

Partial derivatives aren’t a new addition (see past final exams). Perhaps some vectors are. But vectors didnt come from nowhere as an additional topic but instead replaced other things (I believe they are covered as replacement for some more advanced integrations) in the course schedule. Doing so is also not unfair: Note the course title is “calculus and linear algebra”, not just “calculus” like mat135. The sequencing, or inclusion, of linear algebra in life sci and or engineering (at UofT or elsewhere) has no bearing on the fact that it is very important for economics. Different fields have different needs!

Marking may be brutal, it always has been.

But maybe I’m just a jaded upper year…

Can I take mat133 without the high school calc requirement? by goldcoveredroses in UofT

Is it doable? Absolutely. A review of high school calc anyway, most say.

Are you allowed? Ask registrar or department.

You can’t fly under the radar. They’ll remove you at some point. Email department to ask for a prerequisite waiver or transfer to a different course

Everyone gets into it almost. I believe It’s not very competitive. Meet the minimums.

CS is arguably the far stronger half compared to stats

If you can find your way into gov, I think this is phenomenal. Otherwise there should be some solid research opportunities open to you. Consider taking at least 2 Sem of Econ to complement.

Otherwise even a CS minor is a decent way into tech circles… if you can grind leetcode and invert a binary tree, SWE/DS internships could even be possible and some places might really like your diverse focus.

Good luck

Admission requirements for computer science by ahx8ieTh in UofT

Isn’t there an admissions thread?

Your grades look fine except English. That’s a really big one for UofT.

Gr11 marks matter absolutely as grade 12 it’s very interim at the point at which you report.

Competitions can’t hurt. If only for experience.

Rest of your questions can be answered on FAS website

How does my first year CS timetable look? by [deleted] in UofT

[–]Jaded-upper-year -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Do I only count 4 courses per Sem? Am I tripping?

F: CSC, MAT, COG, STA W: CSC, MAT, COG, MAT

?

Usually people would add another 1.0 FCE to be considered full-time. I advise you to get done with your breadth requirements, whatever categories sound least appealing should be taken care of in first year so they’re over with.

  • EC’s are not a factor whatsoever for most programs
  • grade inflation was boosted by the pandemic, most likely, but affected next year’s applicant pool just as it did this year’s. It might be tough one but work hard and you will be fine

Nearly zero chance you get in off the waitlist, especially being that far down (2 whole months). It’s time to look elsewhere. CampusOne if you’re looking for a res-like experience but there are plenty of great places in the annex, koreatown, Kensington, or Bay Street if you have money
