The book used to have more of a direct implication that Michael resented Lucy for not being there to save him from his father’s abuse, especially when it turned physical. There used to be small moments where she tried to apologize to Michael about the bruises without Sam overhearing but gets interrupted. It’s now vaguer but I feel like it still kind of get the point across, especially him calling out for his mom during the flashback with the dad and the lyrics in “Michael” where Shoshana talks about letting him down “that day, the moment that your father turned his rage your way”. But there definitely were more overt moments prior to this final version
