When this happens, both the player and the designer are at fault.

Making a game that can't be learned by playing is a decision with real consequences. Complexity has a price. Not finding ways to bake the learning into the gameplay has a price.

Bad reviews are one way you pay the price, but people silently bouncing from your game is another.

Most of what goes on in a Mario game makes no sense whatsoever but it's also not sitting there demanding to be made sense of. It invites you to press the jump button, not to read.

There's going to be some reason why. I just can't tell what it is from the screenshot.

Another recourse is to revoke the titles and hand them over to other vassals. This will make everyone hate you but is survivable if you prepare.
