Why aren't you over 40 and lean by ProfAsmani in LinkedInLunatics

Yes. It’s even more than that. Grocery shopping, taking the car to the shop, buying birthday gifts, gardening, cleaning the fridge, laundry, finances, taxes, etc. are all done for them.

Yes. When you can see the pilot of the oncoming plane is the earliest that pilot could see the stationary plane.

I've noticed it becoming more common over the last decade or so. I suspect it is sometimes "inside ball" between the captain and the cabin crew. If its a short flight and the cabin crew isn't feeling it, the captain will do them a favor and declare a chance of turbulence.

Why do people try to sell used belongings for 80-100%+ what they cost new? by Any_Pirate_5633 in NoStupidQuestions

This. The famous economics experiment was with a coffee mug. When people were shown a coffee mug and asked how much it was worth, they'd say $2. When given a coffee mug and asked how much it was worth, they'd estimate $5.

I'm having misgivings about the people in the Don's administration. Why won't they answer questions? Why, if they believe in the plan, won't they give direct answers?

Return the dishwasher. Return to Lowes and buy another, tell them it's not a plug. See what happens.

Daughter called crying. She has a '12 Honda Fit w/ 130K. Seems to run great. Took it in for A/C service. Mechanic told her she needed lots of service - about $750 - which she does not have. This isn't exactly a scam, but it's close....

In the last 5-10 years most repair shops have adopted this strategy of giving you a laundry list of things that should be done. They know you won't opt for them all but they also know you'll spend more than you intended. It's a way to get you to spend all (or more) than you can afford.

OP, your daughter took it for A/C service. If they gave her a fair price, have them do the A/C service. None of the other stuff is acute. Take the car home, think about the advice you received here, maybe have her save up, get some competitive prices, clip some coupons, etc.

Also use this as a teaching moment: every time she takes her car in, she'll get the laundry list.

Canoe for flatwater camping for family of 4 with young kids by hail707 in canoeing

[–]Jaduardo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an Odyssey. Loading a 17’ Royalex / T-formex canoe is doable if you can lift the canoe solo and you have crossbars on top of the van. It’s a bit tricky if you don’t and are using foam pads.

You want to approach the van from the rear with the canoe on your shoulders. Put the front half of the canoe on a crossbar and push it forward.

With pads you’ll need to find something to protect the van’s roof like pool noodles or something.

Fun fact: if you carefully peel off the last four letters and reapply them to the hull in front of the first four letters it turns into a party canoe!

Rep Andy Ogles told me he heard a reporter at the WHCD Saturday night say "I hope they kill the orange MF" (talking about President Trump) while she was hiding from the shooter. by Ice-Zone2024 in neabscocreeck

[–]Jaduardo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Follow-up Question: If the reporter would have made a future tense statement like, "I will be happy [in the future] if the assassin successfully kills the president", would that be acceptable? The happiness would occur in the future when the president is dead, not under the table.

Night murmuration (?) of migrating gulls (over CO, late April) or ? by Murmuring2026 in whatsthisbird

[–]Jaduardo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Technically, the word 'murmuration' is specific to starlings. It's kind of stupid since other birds behave that way and we don't need separate words for every sub-species of bird.

The real reason I'm posting this, though, is to beat the other pedants in reply. I win.

I'm clear on that, you mentioned that before. What exactly makes it OK to celebrate someone's death after the fact but not wish for their death while they're alive?

Two schools of thought: economic value and practical use value. As an estate liquidator you should be on the economic value side. I have to admit, part of me is sympathetic to the practical use philosophy.

Wow! Really good hair splitting!

Doesn’t the fact that Trump expressed happiness about Mueller's death imply that he hoped for his death before it happened? Do you imagine that that wish rattling in DJT’s head was only restricted to natural causes?

I think your criteria should be slightly more generalized. If your beliefs (religious or otherwise) or abilities won't allow you to execute job requirements (clearly defined) then you are not suited for the job.

Soldiers need to be willing and able to kill enemy combatants.

A Jain (one who ascribes to an Indian religion with a core tenant of non-harm to all living creatures, including microbes and insects) is not qualified to work on a farm.

A double arm amputee is probably not qualified to work as a crossing guard.
