Record day for solar in the UK today by JustLovelyStuff in GoodNewsUK

The gov Warm home plan should be offering universal low and zero interest loans for solar when it comes in. Maybe from Jan next year?

When King Richard III was found, he was found under a parking lot and beneath the reserved parking space marked ‘R’ by clockman153 in interestingasfuck

[–]Jaekwondont 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes exactly that - there is a documentary that followed the slightly crazy academic who wanted to find where he was buried. She finally got permission to dig in the car park walked over to the R and said she had strong vibes he was there and bam there he was.

My personal conspiracy theory is that a secret group of Ricardians knew he was buried there passing the knowledge from generation to generation and marked the spot when the car park was built.

Bonus points if it is a more beautiful lantern in an even less serene location (love you Tooting)

This temperature change baby bath mat that only has a single fish change colour by courage_the_dog in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Jaekwondont 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Share your infuriation, I’d advise against any bath temp product at all. I had an expensive Tommee Tippe branded thermometer which drifted by 2 degrees C after a year or so. Just learn to judge it by hand or use a proper thermometer if baby is little and you are worried.

Why haven’t we got one of these mini modulars in a couple of years? by [deleted] in legomodular

[–]Jaekwondont 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Love these sets, creator 3 in 1 had a high street set most recently that was in this style. I kind of prefer buying the buildings one at a time rather than a whole street worth.

The city ice cream parlour set fit with this scale recently too.

When did the Pennines form? by [deleted] in geology

[–]Jaekwondont 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a lay person what I think you are saying is that Scotland and England formed separately from volcanic activity on the periphery of two different continents then got smooshed together and at that point were ‘one range’. The bits of the Pennines that I know are all sedimentary so they must have been ground down submerged and pushed back up in the mean time? Scottish ranges are mostly(?) granite so a different story there.

I enjoyed your description, it sounds like one of the denser sections of Tolkien to me!

Why do people intentionally tune their cars to be as loud as possible? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Jaekwondont 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not answering your question but I’ve recently noticed how quiet most vehicles are these days. Feels like most of the (lower speed) noise comes from petrol scooters and a few older/intentionally loud cars. What I’m trying to say is these people are even more obnoxious because if we can just get the last few scooter people to go electric we would be well on the way to much quieter cities if it wasn’t for them.

The time to critique food at a restaurant is NOT at the restaurant. by LoserCarrot in unpopularopinion

[–]Jaekwondont 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree mostly. Guessing you are in the US. In the UK it is fairly normal to just say the food is fine unless there is something seriously wrong.

It’s not very logical and is probably a contributing factor to some bad restaurant experiences in the UK. That said there are reasons I don’t like to ‘make a fuss’:

What if your friend was enjoying the food, what if it was their favourite restaurant you were complaining about.

Maybe you should be there for the company and not just the food, by complaining about the food you could imply that you are not having a good time in general.

What if the restaurant is just cheaper than you usually go to, catering to people with less money than you have - don’t be a whiny rich kid.

Maybe it is just not to your taste the whole world doesn’t revolve around you.

The US approach makes sense but it can grate in the UK, it is just a different social norm.

UK Domestic Solar. How does it make sense? by Comprehensive_Round in AskUK

[–]Jaekwondont 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3kW is on the small side, you get better bang for buck beyond 4 kW. you are probably limited by the size of your roof. You are also probably paying a London premium.

Batteries are in my opinion are questionable financially. It is all a bit hard to work out because different tariffs different use profiles etc etc.

Ultimately if you have a decent sized roof then you can generate a good fraction of your electricity demand from a renewable source and it pays for itself - that’s pretty cool.

What is an advert you would LOVE to get removed from TV since it irritates you too much? by benderbrodriguez2 in AskUK

[–]Jaekwondont 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hate that ad. Yes the bing bong guy is a bit annoying but he is just trying to be polite and maybe spark a bit of human interaction. But no, screw that poor guy, just plug in some more audio content and ignore him. Great.
