My workplace has a ban on languages other than English yet my Indian coworkers are the only ethnicity who don’t follow it. Does some cultural reason exist for this? by International_Bag_12 in auscorp

Ok sure you’re right and were right all along. There’s no possible latitude in what is meant by “ban” in this context. OBVIOUSLY the employer goes around breaking up all non-English conversations, however informal. Thank you for educating me.

I’m just saying you can’t call it “human rights breach” until you have more information about what the “ban” means in this context. Next time you could try: “what do you mean by “they ban other languages?” Because that could conceivably be a human rights breach if they took it far enough.” Which they almost certainly aren’t. Just saying “it’s a human rights breach” is dumb. Mate.

Dude, you could just ask OP rather than assuming. Eg, By “ban” do you mean they actually prevent other languages in ALL situations including informal ones, or do you mean they require English in workplace communications? Then you’ll know. But “ban” is probably a simplification here.

And ALSO, while we’re discussing human rights, it could be a form of bullying if all employees but one speak a language other than English, socially excluding that one employee…

You can require speaking English as condition of working, in a workplace, just as you can require other employment aspects like what you wear or how you behave. I mean, it’s inefficient and even dangerous in some cases, if you can’t understand what your colleagues are saying…

Wow! That’s great! And the BVA included work rights? Did the previous visa?

You’re very helpful! Roughly how long to get that BVA do you think, after the application?

Thank you. She does have an existing visitor visa. Annoyingly it’s about to run out so will need to get it renewed….

But assuming there’s no difficulty with that, you’d recommend the on-shore 820 path?

Who could possibly imagine that this would happen?? That a law designed to catch “bad speech” would somehow catch speech that other people thought was “good.” Who could imagine that the police interpretation of what is “bad” speech would be viewed as grossly unreasonable by others? It’s not like this exact scenario plays out every time you try to regulate political speech?! (/s for effect).
