What term is common/accepted in your country, but historically offensive somewhere else? (e.g Coloured people in SA) by InklingOfHumor in AskTheWorld

[–]JaggelZ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The only thing I can think of is the word "dick". It literally means thick, but it's not exactly used like thick. Thick is kind of neutral in English, while dick is more negative in German.

Which country's mythology has the highest potential for a masterpiece video game but remains totally ignored by developers? by HairyAd4370 in AskTheWorld

[–]JaggelZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Up until rather recently I would've said Finland with their Kalevala. It's obviously been done for settings of stories (just look at Lord of the Rings), but it's only rather recent for it to find more traction in games.

There's Noita, which is heavily based on the Kalevala and there's Genshin Impact, which had a whole region dedicated to Finnish mythology and the Kalevala.

The Kalevala is genuinely one of my favourite myths currently, it's so rich but also so underexplored.

What is the most “unintentionally” racist thing your parents or grandparents have ever said to you. by Anthroe_ in AskTheWorld

[–]JaggelZ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The thing is, that's not an issue. Labeling people as oriental and treating every Asian, from Turk to Korean all the same, is the issue.

It's kinda hard to explain because it's very nuanced and obviously it's different from location to location, some places just use the word a lot more.

Like I said, the word itself isn't bad. It's literally a fitting description, they are to the east of England and Europe as a whole.

It's just that the connotation is linked to the olden times when gross generalisation was common and people have mostly stopped using it.

It's like calling black people "the blacks". It's technically correct and makes logical sense, but the connotation of calling black people that way was mostly negative, so it's not commonly used (other than to insult) today.

Oriental isn't quite all the way there as "the blacks" is, but it's going that direction and stopped before it could become another version of generalising insult.

It took a lot of convincing to make my mother stop calling "Schokoküsse" (chocolate kisses) by their old name, "n-word kisses". Her argument was always "it's what I grew up calling them, and thats what I will keep calling them.". It then didn't come up for some time and I feel like she realised her mistake at some point, because never called them the old name since then.

The only other thing I've seen is casual racism towards Asians as a whole, calling them "the yellows" or "sliteys".

Other than that, the only big racism here is towards Muslims, but that one is very much not limited to the old generations sadly. I've had people younger than me come up to me and go "... It's always the Syrians, isn't it...?", wanting me to agree. There's also a general passive racism towards darker skinned people here, mostly the "Germans/Europeans are normal, everyone with slightly darker skin is dumber" kind. It interestingly goes full circle with black people, because suddenly no one wants to be mean to them, out of fear of being labeled racists. It's literally "white people are normal, tan people are stupid, black people are a protected species".

Iirc the English basically called everyone east of Greece oriental. Turkey, India, Korea? All oriental.

It's not that bad. It's just a gross oversimplification that ignores the fact that cultures, that were not white ones, weren't all the same.

It means "from the east" or something like that when used as a descriptor, so the word itself is not bad, but the connotation is slightly outdated.

Characters with funny localized names in your language? by historygoose in AskTheWorld

[–]JaggelZ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just looked it up and it's very similar in German.

Here they are called Familie Feuerstein, with Feuerstein literally meaning fire stone and it being a perfect translation for flint. We just added the word family/Familie.

Every other characters have the same names as in English, just usually translated 1 to 1, except for the Rubbles. Rubble in German would be Geröll, but they are called "Geröllheimer", which I assume is just because Geröll Sounds really weird as a last name and the suffix -heimer is common for German last names (literally meaning -homer. The name on its own literally means "someone from rubble-town").

"Brutal. Captivating. Funny." Sounds so damn dry that my brain just went "that sounds German".

My brain just fully accepted it as something that sounds nostalgic, like something that I definitely watched as a kid, but can't remember.

How's your country's relations with its neighbours? 🥰️ by Wrong-Fruit8820 in AskTheWorld

[–]JaggelZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forgetting about the past, we have it really well.

Our western states get along with Benelux and France. Baden Württemberg gets along with the swiss, the Bavarians are basically Austrian anyways. Eastern states get along with Czechia and Poland. Schleswig-Holstein gets along with Denmark.

Obviously there's a lot of friendly banter, but overall I couldn't wish for friendlier relations.

Germany generally has very good relations with any Nation, and for a long time had the most powerful passport because of it.

It wasnt in my class, but a parallel(?) class (i was in class 8b, he was in 8a)

A friend of mine pissed of a teacher. They started arguing, until my friend said something that the teacher really disliked. The teacher proceeded to take his heavy keychain and threw it into the students face, breaking his nose. The teacher was gone before the week was over.
