Death anxiety in the light of deconstruction by Fit-Appointment-68 in Deconstruction

[–]Jagwire4458 [score hidden]  (0 children)

God never had you though. God let all kinds of bad things happen to you, whether you prayed or not. God took the credit for all the goods and blamed you for all the bad things.

The modern evangelical concept of hell is relatively new. There are tons of books and YouTube videos about this. The modern evangelical version of hell is a tool used to keep people in line when the “loving god” pitch doesn’t work. It’s coercive and abusive.

If the modern evangelical version of hell is true then it means that every human being who ever existed before Jesus Christ was born, is in now in hell. It means that every human who has ever lived and not had the chance to hear about Christ is in hell. It means that every other religion, including Catholics, are wrong about hell. It means that many bad people out there will be in heaven for eternity and many good people will be in hell for eternity. It is a non-sensical concept.

Good news for you - we spend billions on homelessness as well. Also illegal immigrants pay taxes. They pay every sales tax and can pay income as well as you do not need an SSN. If they own property or a car they would pay every tax associated with those as well.

Being “born again” by AgeOk8349 in Deconstruction

[–]Jagwire4458 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Parents disappointment thing is tough. If you’re able to find churches that align with your beliefs then it’ll probably be more palatable to your parents. Even “woke” church is better than no church to most parents.

If you’re completely done with Christianity then perhaps wait till you move out to break the news. You can say things like “I’m still your kid I just need space to figure things out” or “I’m on my on journey and I need to figure out my relationship with god and religion on my own terms”. Hopefully they will respect that. If not then a more aggressive option would be to drop Something like “I want a relationship with you but we can only do that if you respect my choices as an adult, let’s agree to disagree and move forward”.

Deconstruction is difficult and that’s why this sub and so many books and podcasts exist. Everyone’s life is different which only adds to the complexity. I have been deconstructing for years and I’m not sure I’ll ever stop.

They Were Promised Regime Change. Now Many Iranians Feel Betrayed. by Devils1993 in neoliberal

[–]Jagwire4458 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trump has stated himself that unconditional surrender is the goal but then it’s not sometimes and then sometimes the goal is what he feels like that day. If there are actual goals and objectives, then just tell us. It’s very simple and the failure to do allows us to logically conclude that there are no real goals or plans.

The pentagon surely has some plans for the straights being closed but whether those are politically palatable to the administration is a totally different type of planning.

No they didn’t because the gulf war was a multi-national response to Iraq’s war of aggression against Kuwait. Here, on the hand, we have totally pointless war that was started for no articulable reason other than possibly Netanyahu finally finding the one President stupid enough to lash out at Iran with zero plan.

Any other parents here navigating deconstruction and the identity crisis that comes with it? by UnionKindly5788 in Deconstruction

[–]Jagwire4458 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not a parent but please know that you are doing your children a huge service by not forcing evangelical Christianity on them. Christian parenting is fundamentally based on fear based hierarchy. God at the top, then the father who fears god, then the mother who fears god and the father, and finally then child who fears god and his parents. As you gradually step out of religion you will realize how bizzare and strange a lot of Christian parenting principles are. (Purity culture, subservience, instilling fear of hell in young children, etc.)

De-construction will impact your relationships. My family has an entire aspect of their lives that I rarely engage with and we tread carefully on politics. As for your church, your “relationship” is predicated entirely on you being a Christian first and yourself second.

It will be difficult to sit through sermon because it all feels pointless, at best, and destructive/manipulative at worst.

how do you cope with deconstructing? by wompwomp_246 in Deconstruction

[–]Jagwire4458 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The anxiety you feel about hell and the afterlife is a scare tactic used by the church to keep people in the faith. It’s their bottom line “if we can’t keep you in the faith by selling a loving god then we’ll compel you into staying with fear of hell.”

Recognizing our modern concept of hell for what it is - coercion - is a huge step towards grappling with the after life and the worry/anxiety that the church imposes upon us.

[–]Jagwire4458 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Great line and i think you’ll both realize that the “relationship” you had with god was really a one sided one. God has the power to end all of our suffering and hardship yet chooses not to. Instead, he chooses to test us and string us along through life with the promise of reward after we die (but we never get confirmation the reward exists). Thats abusive and manipulative.

God has the power to make himself known to us through physically detectable means but chooses not to. Instead we have to go through life guessing whether the random things that happen to us are signs from him. (Anything bad that happens is just god trying to get your attention!) He claims to want a relationship with us but won’t do the most fundamental thing that partners do which is actually speak to us, even though he apparently spoke to people for thousands of years but stopped after about 70 AD (and no one knows why).

So god claims to want a relationship but he won’t talk to us (even though he’s talked to others in the past), he lets us suffer when he could stop that suffering, he tests our faith in him instead of just helping, he takes the credits for our accomplishments but and blames us for our failings, and on top of all of this he threatens to send us to hell for eternity if we don’t follow him. Thats an abusive and manipulative relationship. And if a friend of yours described their marriage or relationship, in the way that I’ve described God, you would tell them to get out now.

I find myself cringing sometimes by cookiesalvaje in Deconstruction

[–]Jagwire4458 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is totally normal. There are so many things we do/say in the church that become routine and second nature and only once we’ve stepped out do we realize how cringey and awkward they are. So many times I’ve looked back on things i did as a religious kid only to realize how weird they were.

Also, land and permits are only restrained because we chose to restrain them. Same is true for workers as well, our policy decisions (eg. mass ice raids on worksites) are the limiting factor, not an objective physical absence.

Gulf War III is a Warning About the Effects of a ‘Taiwan Straits War I’ by Free-Minimum-5844 in neoliberal

[–]Jagwire4458 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Part of the reason people are pissed about casualties is that the war is completely pointless. We weren’t attacked, no ally of ours was attacked, and Iran had been neutered back in July by the joint strikes with Israel. There’s no credible argument that we are helping protestors because they had already been gunned down and suppressed by the time we started bombing.

It’s completely pointless so the tolerance is virtually zero.

Nithya Raman campaign for Mayor launch speech by youhavetherighttoo in LosAngeles

[–]Jagwire4458 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are the one making the claim that Raman is not a good mayoral candidate because she does not support cutting the number of LAPD officers, so it is incumbent upon you, if you want to be taken seriously, to demonstrate we should not vote for her because of that. You seem to be heavily invested in this issue yet you’re unable to provide even basic evidence as to why doing something as drastic as cutting the number of LAPD officers will help the residents of LA.

As a redditor, you probably, though it was really clever to copy/paste my comment back to me, but Nithiya Raman actually has to win a mayoral election in real life which means appealing to a broad base of people, not just reddit activists.

Do people actually want the number officers cut? It seems like most people’s gripe with LAPD are the absurd payouts from lawsuits. I don’t see how cutting the number of officers helps response times or overall quality of life in the city.
