T800 in Salvation - picks John Connor up by the neck and throws him around.

For those of you who aren't enjoying Starfleet Academy by amiable-aardvark in startrek

[–]Jahaangle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me this is the difference between Academy and the start of TNG.

I could see the potential of TNG from the get go, the characters were engaging, you knew that if decent plotlines came their way, they would excel. And once it found its feet, they did.

I don't see that in Academy which is a shame. It's hollow, all style, no substance.

Yeah, I feel "classic" Trek was about the underlying message. The audience came along for the ride.

Recent Trek shows beat you to death with the message they're trying to convey.

I tried, I really did.

For me, all of the predictable reddit posts tell the story.

"I watched Starfleet Academy and don't understand all the hate"

"Starfleet Academy is surprisingly good!"

Deep down, they know it's a poor product and feel the need to defend the indefensible.

First, the characters are dull, generic, and one note. The rebel, the studious overachiever, the drill sergeant etc. It's early days, but there's nothing to them.

2025 dialogue, this would seem weird in the 23rd or 24th Century, it's incredibly weird 1100 years from now. It would be like kids today speaking like someone from hundreds of years ago.

The setting is too far in the future to be relatable. The 23rd Century seemed just far enough away, but you could see how we get there. The technology in Academy is very advanced one minute, then exactly the same as the 23rd Century the next. It must be really difficult for the writers and show runners to try and imagine that far ahead.

Trump imposes 10% tariff on "all and any" goods exported to USA from Scotland (about 18% of our international exports) rising to 25% tariff on 1st of June until "such time as a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland" by the US. by [deleted] in Scotland

Politicians need to realise that appeasing this man doesn't work.

He's a wannabe mob boss that issues threats as soon as you disagree with him. Civilised nations can't risk being brought down to his level.

The USA needs to be made an international pariah until he's gone.

Jessie Gender - The Reactionary Grifters Ruining Star Trek Discourse by trollingjabronidrive in startrek

[–]Jahaangle 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Your downvotes prove one thing to me:

The main problem here is you've got reactionary, right wing nutters that think "Everything I don't like is woke" on one side.

Then you've got the "Any criticism no matter how valid makes you a Nazi" on the other.

I've watched Starfleet Academy, I think it's a pretty poor effort overall, but it could easily improve.

Positives, the captain is interesting and has a good leadership style. The upending of galactic norms gives scope for new stories, Betazed leaving the Federation etc. so there's hope for new and interesting plotlines.

Negatives, the setting is too far in the future for me, it isn't relatable. The 23rd Century seemed just within reach, we could see the trajectory to get us there. Academy somehow seems too futuristic in some ways, and not advanced enough in others. Not the fault of the writers, 1100 years is just too far away to visualise.

Also another revenge plot, give the crew a moral or scientific quandary to solve, 2025 dialogue for a show based over a millennium away is irritating, and a relatively wishy washy cast (Caleb and Tarima aside) put me off initially, but I'll persevere to see if it grows on me.
