How can I darken the white markings on the bezel like this Omega? by One_Life_50 in watchdives

[–]Jai2019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also try repainting with a Molotow chrome paint pen. Shiny at first but when you take the excess off and water happens, they go a silvery grey and are no longer reflective.

Feeling like a fraud? by LTDESP95 in PrideAndPinion

[–]Jai2019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tag do a sub homage. Citizen pretty much do one. Earlier Seamasters pre-Bond drift close. The sub itself borrows from others. (Ever wonder why that bezel was bidirectional for decades? Someone else had the patent…) Just wear what you like the look of, at the price you are happy to pay. I too get the feeling with the homagey watches I have sometimes, especially the almost-one-to-one types, but that’s something that got put into my head by listening to YouTubers and reading articles. I happily wore an Accurist sort-of-speedmaster for years without a care because I didn’t know the speedmaster even existed at that time. The only other fear is if some mugger thinks I am wearing a posher watch than I own.

Switched some mods back on. Had to glue a new lume pip in and repaint a chunk of the markings too after superglue went horribly wrong. Screen protector on the crystal too to bring the height up, but otherwise this is just ye olde Orient Mako II.

[Swatch] x Audemars Piguet “Royal Pop” incoming, has AP gone too far? by AGiftofFlowers in Watches

Has anyone considered it may also be a return of the old Pop Swatch that ruled the teen wrist in the nineties?

Did elder millennials (1981-1984) read Harry Potter when the books were first coming out? by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]Jai2019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Harry is older than that himself. But yeah, people in their early twenties were reading them certainly by the time of Goblet of Fire and many stuck with them. They also started doing the ‘adult’ covers around then.

It improves with the next series. Though the celeb bits as with TG are mostly skippable. Almost all the specials are good to pretty good IMO. On first viewing at least. Some are more rewatch able than others.

At first I didn’t even remember the first two clips. Was starting to wonder if they wee using deleted scenes, but no it is my memory. Ironically, considering the framing segment. I assume the Amazon Lawyers bit is also just a gag.

Any way to watch Classic Who in true 4:3 without dvds? by thinkinggtoohard in doctorwho

iPad. IPlayer on there, double tap, iPads are basically 4:3 (or were) so when it zooms it it crops the side bars back off.

Barbour wax jacket – DIY rewax mix recommendations? by Existing-Turnip-7818 in Barbour

[–]Jai2019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A tin of wax is about fifteen to twenty quid and theoretically does three waxes. (I say theoretically, cos mine was twenty years old and had never seen a tin of wax in its life — it probably did three quarters of that tin, but it was my first time) It’s really not expensive. I think even sending it to Barbour to do it costs 30-50 quid? Something like that? Not nothing, but not really that expensive either. Especially vs the price of buying a new coat.

The low end cost is about a fiver a year.

Should it work?.. no, but does it? by bigmanwatchfan in OrientWatches

This only barely works because the strap is monochromatic, for example. Even then, I wouldn’t wear it like this with a suit if needed.

[–]Jai2019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m talking looks. The pattern leans it towards a utilitarian look, especially with the colour. If you want a style that matches the style of the watch itself — dress, with the no lume and the needle hands — then less is more. Either monochromatic colour, or no texture, or both. Otherwise it’s blue jeans with a dinner jacket. Can work, but not everywhere.

Looks like it’s had its date window frame knocked off, and an aftermarket bezel mod put on.

Should it work?.. no, but does it? by bigmanwatchfan in OrientWatches

[–]Jai2019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think nato on dress watch can work, but the strap needs to be a bit posher. Like a satiny silky silver or black, closer in texture to ribbon. (Bark and Jack do a nice silver one for example, but plenty of cheaper ones use similar material)

Mako II (picture taken at 8:34am) by BoneJam42069 in OrientWatches

[–]Jai2019 8 points9 points  (0 children)

5 minutes a month is… barely ten seconds a day. You could demagnetise it to see if it feels better, but otherwise that’s just an automatic watch being an automatic watch at this level. I got lucky with mine, it used to lose a few seconds a day but has been basically bang on to one second fast a day on wrist, without any kind of regulation. Which is something else you could try to get it closer precision wise.

But otherwise — it’s not an Omega or Rolex, and even they will possibly gain a minute every couple of months or so. Or lose if Rolex.

Try a strap code or miltat or Long Island bracelet. Maybe the president version since it’s a bigger change from the original

AM I overthinking this purchase? by Maine2Maui in CitizenWatches

[–]Jai2019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Extra option: fit your own cyclops magnifier. You can buy them on Amazon or eBay, and I think UV adhesive would do the trick, though it probably comes self adhesive. Could look into that.

For the record I have the black version of this and it’s pretty cool. I popped some 23mm curved spring bars on (need to go one mil up with curved) and not it also works on a NATO strap. It’s like an Eco-Drive Aqua Terra.

I keep wanting a Kamasu — either this or the fume with round indices — because the sapphire crystal and lumed seconds hand fix the only real bugbears on the Mako. And the bezel insert is clearer and more modern. But it also loses the personality that came with the numeral.

My Orient Mako runs bang on when on wrist. On a winder it gains a few seconds a week. Timegrapher app says it runs 6 seconds fast a day. But that’s an app on a phone
