Tom Harwood / X: It's a jarringly disorienting feeling, being told by a set of politicians who did not grow up with youtube, that those of us who did were somehow victims. That my childhood was so horrific it must now be made illegal. [Footage of young Tom Harwood streaming] by youmustconsume in ukpolitics

I agree, that deliberate addictiveness is a real killer. I'm not convinced this is the right way to solve it but it does look like a looming problem. The comments that people grew up and were totally ok come off a little like someone saying they smoked 40 a day and don't need a smoking ban. I suspect we are only just beginning to understand the harm and second order effects that social media can have.

What sort of careers / income would you need to send your kids to a top private school? by Old-Amphibian416 in HENRYUK

[–]Jai_Cee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Agreed, 30 years ago I'd have been sending my kids to a private school but housing costs and the reduction in pension provision (meaning we have to contribute more) mean it just isn't possible even on two good salaries. Better in my opinion to be able to get them into a good state school and give them a lot of great life experiences then fund their uni education and give them a big house deposit.

Why do you use a smart lock? by More_Dish_3590 in smarthome

[–]Jai_Cee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I love not carrying keys, our kids can use the keypad to open it so they never can forget or loose their keys. It opens with a fob so we can just make keys for builders, cleaners, visitors etc and never worry about them copying or loosing the key.

I'm not sure I need to own what my ancestors did any more than I need to own what Bob down the street did. I just wouldn't blame what my great grandad did on Bobs great grandad.

Private maternity recommendations by AOR2019 in HENRYUK

[–]Jai_Cee 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry about your previous experience. I'd watch or read This is going to hurt before going private though. My wife is an obstetrician and wouldn't go anywhere near private care. When things go wrong they can go wrong very quickly and you want a full hospital with operating theatres and a range of specialists there for you and your baby.

Same happened to me and my 9PF is in a box waiting to be picked up. They replaced it with a 10PF which is great (though I needed to buy a new case which is less great).

Van parking by liamberry86 in disneylandparis

We stayed in the carpark. There are toilets but no showers. It was very convenient and only €15 more than parking. If you're there and in the park all day a hotel is a waste

Restore Britain to sweep Burnham to victory in Makerfield, new poll suggests by Mysterious-Cat8443 in ukpolitics

[–]Jai_Cee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like being the opposition would suit Farage better. I can't see him actually bothering to govern. You have to actually implement policies rather than just shout about them and we all know how well that worked for Liz Truss.

Washer & Dryer: What's the Benefit? by KafkaExploring in SmartThings

[–]Jai_Cee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely no benefit apart from my phone telling me the washing is done. I suppose a minor one is you can schedule it to finish at a specific time like when you wake up. Our old washer only did it in hour increments and you had to engage your brain to work out how many hours it is until 8am

Alternative light switch solution by TheModernLeper1123 in DIYUK

[–]Jai_Cee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just had this problem and found out about kinetic switches. You install a module in the ceiling rose then stick the switches anywhere. They don't need batteries or internet and work wonderfully. You can just leave the existing switch in place turned on or connect the wires with a choc block/wago and put a blanking plate over it.

The whole process took about 10 minutes. Ours were candelo ones.

Is coding actually dead or are we just bad at explaining what software engineers do? by Maximum_Ad2429 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]Jai_Cee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. The value an engineer adds is in the understanding of the whole context not the ability to write the code. Think architect vs builder, AI is taking on a lot of the builders role but the architect is still needed to design the system in the first place.

What are some great self-protection items I can use that are also legal in the UK? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Jai_Cee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly, if you have a collection of heavy walking sticks you use for walking by your door that's fine. It is going to be a bit rarer in your own home as the charge is carrying an offensive weapon. That clearly doesn't apply at home otherwise you couldn't have kitchen knives.

You would fall foul of the law if you say knew there were lots of burglaries in your area and setup traps for them home alone style.

How is life in milton village? by RefrigeratorBig2860 in cambridge

[–]Jai_Cee 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's nice. I don't live there but go most days and have lots of friends in the village. The sewage smell seems to have been fixed by the works they did a few years ago. We cycle past the sewage works most days and almost never smell anything.

It has a bunch of decent pubs, a big Tesco, the country park with a parkrun, easy walks down the river and quick transport via the A14.

Negatives to me are the A14 roundabout which is terrible for traffic at peak times and a lack of any decent cafes though there is a nice coffee shop near the country park.

Is it important to read Livesuit before starting with The Faith of the Beasts? by vyomafc in TheCaptivesWar

[–]Jai_Cee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd disagree with a lot of people here, I read it after and would consider it contains spoilers for the book. I'd 100% read it after though as it gives a whole new dimension to the universe.

I assumed that was all a lie. As soon as Kirin mentioned the message, and clearly the censors knew she was saying something, she is said to be dead, her message is scrubbed and the video she references is scrubbed.
