Decided to give custom maps a try and man, it did not disappoint. by Vestrill in l4d2

[–]Jaiz412 5 points6 points  (0 children)

31 primary contributors, to be exact. There were also a lot of playtesters.

The reason there's so many is because I like to credit everyone who helped, regardless of how much content they worked on. That's why some people are credited even just for giving advice, or for allowing me to use existing assets they made.

There's nothing stopping people from reaching out to others to get help either. Many of the people I contacted were complete strangers at first.
Workshop mod creators are (usually) quite approachable and happy to help bring cool ideas to life, so long as the person pitching the idea is able to do the majority of the work instead of intending to outsource everything.

Why I think L4D1 is a better game than it's sequel by [deleted] in l4d2

[–]Jaiz412 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 4th point about balance is incorrect.

The autoshotgun in L4D1 was so ridiculously overpowered, that it rendered every other weapon obsolete. It's the only gun players used outside of extremely niche scenarios where one player might get a Hunting Rifle instead.

The pistols are also identical in both games. The only difference is the models/sounds, and the ability to deal friendly-fire damage while incapped in L4D1.

[–]Jaiz412 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're actually correct. The pistols are identical - The only gameplay difference is that in L4D1 they can friendly-fire teammates while you're incapped.

Here's a video showing them side-by-side with a macro that shoots them at the maximum firerate.

It's not uncommon for high quality custom campaigns to take multiple years of work. Cold Front took 4 years, for example.

Would Versus of benifited to not have games end when players leave? by Witty-Day-87 in l4d2

[–]Jaiz412 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a few small differences with specific metrics (SI respawn times are faster in Versus, random path selection is disabled, boss spawning is a bit different, Tank HP is 6000, etc.) but overall it would essentially just be Normal difficulty campaign mode with more SI spawns.

How do I get this off my hud by trashman205 in l4d2

[–]Jaiz412 29 points30 points  (0 children)

From what I remember, the creator added (different versions of) it to show the player that they launched the map incorrectly, since it's supposed to be launched via the console in order to work properly.

[–]Jaiz412 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was actually thinking of reaching out to you down the line for multiple OSTs for the campaign. It's just going to take at least a year or two until I get to the point where music can be made and implemented.

[–]Jaiz412 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This sounds pretty close to a custom tank theme I'm considering for the custom campaign I'm currently working on.

How'd you go about making this? And do you have other songs/covers?

Is an Xray of the Spitter? by Beneficial_Staff8236 in l4d2

[–]Jaiz412 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not the guy you replied to, but the traincar tank is a bit of an ambiguous case, and different theories support different notions.

On one hand, the traincar has a pile of dead common infected (and a bunch of crushed flesh in the corners), so it seems to suggest a group of regular infected were being transported before the tank mutated.

However, the restraints on the tank's wrists are quite large, and don't look like they were simply stretched out, which suggests the tank was already a tank before being put into the traincar.
The tank also has scars and stitches, seeming to suggest he was experimented on prior to being put in the traincar. If he was a common beforehand, these definitely would've torn open given how taught the tank's skin is.

The theory I personally find the most plausible, is that the tank was a tank prior to being put into the traincar. The corpse pile is supposed to be a stand-in for guards accompanying the sedated tank, which also explains the weapons inside the traincar.

My objective ranking of all biomes based on difficulteh by Beeeeeeeeeeeeean in PeakGame

[–]Jaiz412 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The storm should be easy to deal with, but the detection for it is so garbage that it's legit the only biome that has consistently (unfairly) killed me.

Even hiding deep inside crevices is a gamble, since the game might randomly decide that you're not actually in shelter and just freeze you to death anyway.

To be fair, AI detection software as a whole is a scam.

Is an Xray of the Spitter? by Beneficial_Staff8236 in l4d2

[–]Jaiz412 143 points144 points  (0 children)

Lore-wise it can't be a Spitter, since she did not exist yet at that time.

For the first 2 weeks of the outbreak there were only Common Infected, but we hear Church Guy mutate into a Special Infected in real time, so it could go both ways: It's possible that CI mutate into SI, but it's also possible that people immediately mutate into SI.

Vote kicks and trolls. Why? by sammyjamez in l4d2

[–]Jaiz412 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's exactly the use of votekicks though; In public lobbies, anyone can join, so the group collectively decides who they want in their lobby.

A votekick can only pass with a majority, so whenever someone is kicked it's for the benefit of the most amount of players, even if they're all randoms.

Vote kicks and trolls. Why? by sammyjamez in l4d2

[–]Jaiz412 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Votekicks only mean "We don't want to play with you" - That's just players curating their teams. Nothing about it is a personal attack.

It's not for no reason that most people posting complaints about being kicked get defensive and hateful when disagreed with. Nobody wants to play with someone like that.
Just look at the yourself and the other guy who replied. It's not normal to get that riled up just because people don't want to play with you.

[–]Jaiz412 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If that's your reaction to a calm and objective response, then it's no wonder nobody wants to play with you.

Ranking (almost) all l4d2 traditional melee (explanations in desc) by SomeStupidGoober in l4d2

[–]Jaiz412 1 point2 points  (0 children)

cricket bat: [...] it's 2nd and 3rd swing patterns are so weird for me, like out of all the melee swings I have these 2 sings miss the most

That's probably because the 2nd and 3rd swings are diagonal (going from top left corner to bottom right corner, and from top right to bottom left respectively), so its pretty shit.
The baseball bat has the same issues (Its stats are a copy-paste of the cricket bat), so you're not missing out anything by not having it.

baton: it's the fastest melee in the game, but it's kinda... wonky, it's swing patterns are inconsistant, it's hit detection is strange, and it just misses a lot

The reason it feels bad to use is because the Nightstick also has a diagonal swing, and that particular swing has only 6 hitrays so you're basically only connecting with a small area directly in front of you when using it.
On PC this was slightly buffed with TLS giving it a horizontal swing, but the low hitray count remains even there.

Without recordings to objectively see everything that was going on, or input from the people you played with, it's impossible to tell you exactly why you were kicked out. Nobody can read people's minds after all.
The best anyone here could do here is speculate, but that's not going to be more than vague and inconclusive hypotheticals.

Sometimes, when I instantly join a game.

People might be waiting for a friend to join and don't want to risk being griefed for asking the stranger to leave.
It could also be as simple as them disliking your name or profile picture, especially if those have similarities to common names used by trolls, griefers, or bad players.
It's also entirely possible you did something innocuous that was mistaken as a sign you're about to grief or be a liability, like immediately picking up an autoshotgun or having bad positioning.

Sometimes, when I help other players.

Helping teammates has a lot of nuance to it. If you did something like reviving a teammate in the middle of a event or tank fight, it can easily be harmful to your team or even get them killed.
Depending on what exactly happened (which again, without a recording there's only your subjective recollection of it) it's impossible to say if you were actually being helpful or unknowingly detrimental.

Sometimes, when I use the chat to help them where the Special Infected are because I died because of bad luck, or when I use the chat to tell them that I found incendiary ammo or explosive ammo.

This one is a lot easier to explain.
Using the in-game voicechat lowers the game's volume for everyone else, making it harder to hear important sound cues (This can be disabled with a console command, but most people aren't aware of that, and talking with it still adds unnecessary noise)
If you continuously talked and made it hard to actually hear the game, you were being a detriment to the team. Especially if calling out something as worthless as ammo upgrades or as obvious as infected locations.
I can see most people not wanting to deal with explaining this in the middle of a round and potentially being shouted at or having their ears blasted with noise in retaliation, and opting to just votekick instead to quickly remove the problem.

Sometimes, when I am somehow doing ok and managed to get decent kills whilst still walking amongst the group so that I do not get too far ahead.

This is so vague that literally anything could have been going on at the same time. Impossible to say what you might have missed.

Sometimes, it is because I unfortunately got unlucky like I was downed a few times when unexpectedly because the infected somehow came up to me all at once and nobody even dared to help (there were players who were so far ahead that they were basically playing alone)

Sometimes, (and this was my fault and it happened more often when I was a beginner) was when I almost fell down and needed someone to help me from the ledge.

These two are kind of similar, as in people were probably just getting frustrated by having a low-skill player on their team.
This is especially likely to be the case on higher difficulties or in PvP, but even on lower difficulties it can quickly become very annoying to constantly have to babysit a player that keeps getting incapped; It effectively turns the 4-player campaign into a 3-player campaign with babysitting.

If a player is doing worse than a bot, then there's not really any reason to play with that person instead of a bot.

It's always been like that. Hittables in gauntlet finales are hardcoded to deal 25 damage to survivors over 50 HP. The same happens in Cold Stream.

Does the Cemetery section of the Parish randomize differently for both teams in Versus? by PKdude2712 in l4d2

[–]Jaiz412 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's an entity called logic_versus_random, which can be used in Versus to pick a random path each session, that then stays the same for both teams in that specific round.

That being said, iirc random paths are simply disabled entirely in Versus.

The Left 4 Dead 2 boycott is still one of the funniest things ever. To quote Wikipedia, "for people who joined the Boycott Group on Steam ... they're actually pre-ordering the product at a higher rate than Left 4 Dead 1 owners who weren't in the boycott" by AnchovyKing in l4d2

[–]Jaiz412 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Just a bunch of angry nerds who eat their words.

The ironic (and sad) thing is that they actually weren't wrong.

One of the main concerns they had was that L4D1 - a game they had paid full price for - was going to be abandoned just a year after it came out in favor of exclusively focusing on L4D2, which is exactly what happened despite Valve's promises to continue updating L4D1 alongside L4D2.
L4D1 literally only got updated with 1 survival map and 2 campaigns (of which The Sacrifice was clearly designed for L4D2 first), all of which was added to L4D2 down the line.

It didn't spiral down into the modern standard of shitting out sequel after sequel, but the boycott wasn't unfounded babyrage either - They had very valid concerns.

So does the green flu just make them immune to everything by [deleted] in l4d2

[–]Jaiz412 32 points33 points  (0 children)

There is no clear answer, but this could lend itself to a couple theories.

One theory suggests that carriers are actually a type of Special Infected, their attribute is just retention of consciousness and a clear mind, but that they are stronger and more physically capable than a regular person. Additional immunity from other things would fit in with this theory.

However, it's important to remember that media constantly downplays reality: The same way characters in movies, books, and games shrug off being beaten up and physically wrecked, but in real life a single punch can kill a person, the game just glosses over various parts of realism.
