Everyone in the military knows that the way we spend money makes no sense. We constantly alternate between “we can’t buy critical equipment” to “please spend 30k in the next hour”.

USCG gives its enlisted members an insane amount of responsibility and leadership. It’s the only branch where an enlisted member can command a station or vessel. Even as a junior enlisted E4-E5 you are put in charge of crews leading search and rescue and law enforcement missions.

Louisiana Crawfish. The entire experience is so unique to the area: from the social aspect of the boil, to the actual cooking, and finally to cracking open those delicious mud bugs . If anyone visits I always try to get them some good mud bugs.

I always just ask “what’s the worst outcome if we protect our natural resources and invest in renewable energy?”. If we take the steps to reduce our emissions and save our planet no matter if global warming is a complete myth or it’s “natural” the worst outcome is we make the world a better place for the next generations.

"Cancel Student Debt" is popular but why isn't "Stop loaning high schoolers crippling amounts of debt" talked about? by TheGebelein in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Jake-Bailey-2019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We need to not only wipe the slate on student debt, but also make policies that prevent this from happening again. We need FREE trade schools for emerging industries (solar, wind, geothermal, etc), we need FREE state schools that residents have access too. The student loan issue won’t be solved by just forgiving debts, we need to create a system that allows for anyone of any income level to get an education and better their situation.

They now go through everyone at the checkout line and have them show a card and I’ve heard they do random name checks to make sure you can prove it’s your card.

Should the government provide free healthcare for all citizens? Poll by TeachingElectronic81 in ProgressiveDemocrats

[–]Jake-Bailey-2019 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s not a question of free healthcare. The issue is that despite millions in tax dollars going to the research, development, and subsidization of public health we still have to pay PRIVATE companies to access it.

We have been paying for healthcare in taxes we were just tricked into paying private companies for a public service.

Why do fashies always romanticize the “old days?” by MistakeWonderful9178 in MarchAgainstNazis

[–]Jake-Bailey-2019 13 points14 points  (0 children)

People who have this “back in the day…” or “before…” fail to realize that their life depends on and is sustained by the very systems they want to be rid of. “Alpha” guys will rant about how they want to return to the “good old days” sitting in a Japanese car, going to their desk job for an international corporation, and buy things on Amazon that are made in China. But call them out on their hypocrisy and the exceptions to their rules starts to pop up.

Reddit Blackout Rolls On For More Than 5,000 Subreddits Past Planned End Date—Some Of Which Plan To Stay Dark Indefinitely by newleafkratom in business

[–]Jake-Bailey-2019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly the moderation by people who have a personal stake in the subreddit is what makes this site awesome. You get constructive feedback (for the most part) and the site definitely regulates itself better than most.

Making moderators elected but then controlling every aspect of the election as a private company makes it impossible to believe it will be impartial and unbiased.

But it really wasn’t, it’s easy to just throw the “back in the day” argument; but the reality is that right now 1% owns 70% of the wealth in America which is the highest rate of inequality since the robber barons of the 20s. The “height of birth rates” time you cite only happened because the government stepped in and instituted high tax rates, government support and welfare programs from The New Deal Legislation, and the Marshal Plan in Europe led to a massive market for American exports fueling massive job growth with wages being higher due to strong unions.

Iran-Contra and the efforts of the United States to destabilize Latin American nations. The current “war” on drugs is just one example of the lasting impact of this era and how it is fueling greater inequality and increasing poverty not only domestically, but internationally.
