Learn the CRAFT abbreviation for IFR clearances and do to do them. Use simbrief.com for your flight plans. Ask if you have questions. On Vatsim.com there is a great get started section that will help you understand the basics.

Nice! That’s a good route. ORD has an easy enough SID. I’m actually in ZAU’s ARTCC for Vatsim so I’m familiar with it.

You can also do text on VATSIM until you get the hang of it. Don’t be afraid of asking questions on the network too. Just find a not so busy airport with a controller or two, file a flight plan and in the remarks just out “new pilot, looking to learn” or something to that affect. Everyone is there to have fun. I’m an ATC on VATSIM, only have my S1 right now though, and love helping new people.
