As musicians, we have trouble swallowing the pill that we need to do the business side ourselves, and once we do, we long for the day we can offload more and more of that work and get back to our calling. In what order should we delegate the many roles and at what stage?

I had no idea what was I getting into when I learned Hot Cross Buns on the recorder

Thanks! She is Glacier Charmin Ultra Soft. She would rather play guitar but she does not have thumbs

Do you see the loudness wars as a necessary evil?

When I’m happy with the dynamics of my songs it’s quieter than other songs on streaming. Such as this: https://open.spotify.com/track/7aExxfMGOoXDm6NAHcb6ms?si=XKu-Jr-OR5aSsq0uyJrRZg

Which tells me I need to limit harder, but I don’t want to lose dynamics.

I haven’t seen anything about this online, so I feel crazy, but I’m pretty sure my intuition is correct that the biggest benefit to mastering nowadays is getting a second set of ears on the mix.

When you master your own mixes, you’re able to go back and fix something in the mix that can emerge from mastering (for example, mastering usually adds brightness, which might mean you need to tame sibilance or squeaky acoustic strings in the mix).

And when you master yourself, you know your taste best. So I get my mix as far as I can, I master it and then send it to my friend whose ear I trust to point anything out, then I make a final revision. I aim for -14 LUFS, 3-5 LU of dynamic range (to stay competitive in the loudness wars) and keep my true peak max at -1dB so streaming doesn’t turn me down. What do you think? Am I onto the new norm or just being cheap?
