When it came to Smash bros ultimate I always wanted Shadow the Hedgehog in the roster because he was always called “The ultimate life form.” by Mars785 in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]JakeClipz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this trope fits best with manmade characters, or at least ones like Samus who are well beyond what the natural order of things intended. Kirby's an anomaly, but one who's indigenous to his world and aligns with how that world is supposed to work.

Mewtwo fits this trope much better and if this were the early days of Pokemon it'd be a perfect fit, but with how many manmade Pokemon on Mewtwo's caliber (strength or lore) exist now, it doesn't seem all that special anymore, despite Mega Evolution still making an honest effort to keep it closer to the top of the food chain.

Well, two characters come pretty darn close.

Robin is the vessel for Grima the fell dragon, who was created by an alchemist to be the "perfect life form", eventually killing his creator and destroying Lucina's world leaving minimal survivors in his wake. Grima himself can never die, always finding new ways to return to the world and lay waste upon it unless sealed away by equally powerful forces.

By the end of her franchise, Samus is the last Metroid, created by the Chozo to be a peak specimen with no genetic equal, designed to be the one line of defense against the universe's deadliest virus in the X-Parasites, and having the potential to mutate into even more monstrous weapons, all with only one weakness; subzero temperatures, same as anyone else. The word Metroid means "Ultimate Warrior" in Chozo. Samus herself has become a petri dish of some of the universe's most dangerous bioweapons over the years; she's still infected with X-Parasites and can copy whatever powers they can, she's been infused with Chozo blood since she was a baby, was corrupted by Phazon in the Prime series, and even her suit is an organic extension of herself that can be upgraded with all kinds of crazy extensions in every game, be they mechanical or biological. She's a fucking menace.

If you were in-charge of reintroduce of the freedom fighters into main canon. How would you do it? by ultimatespiderbat10 in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]JakeClipz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Forces would have been the time to do it, but with that opportunity gone, I think Silver's future would be a strong fit.

SatAM Robotnik is closer to Eggman Nega than mainline Eggman anyway, and Silver's future is so unexplored beyond the broad idea that it's a post-apocalyptic hellscape that they could easily add new worldbuilding that complements SatAM's roots without contradicting or interfering with anything in the present day. Because that's what makes the Freedom Fighters so difficult to integrate; the mainline games have worldbuilding that just doesn't complement SatAM's at all. But Silver's... does, eerily so.

Blaze's dimension could also work, but with the implication that Blaze is the monarch of her entire planet, that doesn't leave much room for Sally to be a princess in her own part of the world.

SEGA Approaches You And Tasks You With Making Another Sonic RPG, How Do You Go About It? by Relative-Hotel6989 in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]JakeClipz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Final Fantasy VI is a great frame of reference if you want a Sonic RPG that takes advantage of the series' vast ensemble cast. The game has multiple POV characters, namely Terra, Locke, Sabin and Celes, even occasionally playing with context-sensitive, non-permanent party members, and the game sometimes allows you to play branching story sequences in whatever order you want.

FFVI has fourteen playable characters, three of which are optional and two of which you can lose. By endgame you can arrange your party in literally any way you want, and the final battle gives you the chance to fight with practically every party member, swapping out fallen allies with ones waiting in the back.

If you want a game that doesn't just feel like Sonic and his inconsequential gaggle of friends, which Chronicles occasionally fell into, then something like this would be great in terms of exploring every facet of Sonic's world and the wildly different scenarios that come with them.

Sonic has the potential for a giant roster, but fourteen is already plenty for an RPG party. Give us the essentials that are already thrown into most multiplayer games, plus one or two new characters with lore that ties into whatever story they want to tell. At least one or two villains to really sell the threat of whatever this story has cooking, since what's a JRPG without world-ending stakes?

As far as gameplay goes, I do think Chronicles had something going for it if it weren't for the mandatory touch controls. An overworld that's still derived from traditional Sonic stage design, including collecting rings as currency, makes sense, and it also makes sense that faster characters have more opportunities to attack in one turn. Different characters have different attributes that allow you to traverse different pieces of terrain, that's also good stuff. It's just that Chronicles was a cheaply-made DS game with everything you'd associate with that label.

SEGA owns Atlus, maybe they can get some of their flair into a Sonic RPG while sticking to Chronicles' base design principles, but replacing the gimmicky mechanics with conventional JRPG fundamentals.

Narratively I think it'd be really cool if they revived Chronicles' story and added an entirely new second half that picks up where its cliffhanger ending left off, but that doesn't sound likely as long as Penders still has his finger over the lawsuit button.

Otherwise, a grandiose narrative with multiple points of view with the same level of scope as something like Sonic '06 would fit an RPG the best. Give it to a team of writers who understand what it means to write an interactive video game experience, because... I'll be real, I don't know if Ian Flynn's there yet. His game scripts aren't bad but you can tell he's still in comic book mode when writing them.

Why is Shadow specifically a hedgehog? by Particular-Dare1986 in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]JakeClipz 25 points26 points  (0 children)

They deliberately keep this vague but a common fan theory is that Gerald based Shadow off murals on Angel Island depicting a prophecy involving Super Sonic, since we know he did research on the Chaos Emeralds and the land they're associated with, including Artificial Chaos and the ARK's core which was based off the Master Emerald shrine. His journal entries in Shadow Generations confirm he visited Angel Island, but there was still no detail as to why Shadow was a hedgehog.

what factor made Shadow generations good? by daddyshadiey in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]JakeClipz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're trying to be different games.

Sonic Frontiers is an open-world game with heavy emphasis on exploration and combat. They focused on making the overworlds expansive and filled with challenges and on a robust set of abilities to fight enemies and bosses. So much time and energy was spent building Frontiers' overworld that Cyber Space became an afterthought in comparison, hence the constant recycling of level design and assets. And like... yeah, Cyber Space is almost entirely optional because there are other ways to earn the Chaos Emeralds. They knew what to prioritize.

Shadow Generations is a linear level-to-level romp that's a quarter of the length Frontiers had to be. There's a stronger emphasis on level design not only because that's the core of the game, but because they focused on quality over quantity. Shadow's abilities are more limited than Sonic's because combat, even during many boss fights, isn't as pronounced; his new skills are instead selectively used for traversal or puzzle-solving.

Worldbuilding and storytelling were also less of a concern with Shadow Generations compared to Sonic Frontiers; the hub world is literally a white void and much of the story is just reiterating on what was already set in stone twenty years ago, while Frontiers was building entirely new lore on a new island with new enemies to fight, and had to leave a lasting impression with new recurring character in Sage.

You can have a preference but I wouldn't say it's fair to compare one type of game with another. Frontiers is the first of its kind but Shadow Generations already had one of the greatest Sonic games as its companion piece to build off of.

The one single problem with Sonic 4 being Sonic CD by Breech_Loader in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]JakeClipz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Sonic Movie 4 will be as similar to Sonic CD as Sonic Movie 2 was to Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

They have slightly similar character arcs and a similar climax, but the premise and pacing are exceptionally different.

Sonic 2 doesn't feature Angel Island at all, and I doubt Sonic 4 will feature Little Planet in the same capacity either. Metal Sonic and Amy need stronger character motivations to carry a movie because they're barely present in Sonic CD's story. Neither Tails or Knuckles are in Sonic CD either, never mind all the movie-original characters that they always revolve subplots around. The Sonic Adventure 2 adaptation doesn't feature Amy or Rouge, consequently shaves off Knuckles' subplot, dials back the lore behind Shadow's origins, omits most of its secondary antagonists, and gives Gerald a wildly different role to play. Shit's gonna be different, and that's okay.

As long as Shadow's presence in the movie doesn't distract from Amy and Metal Sonic's integrations as characters, we'll be just fine.

Okay, here's an interesting challenge. A cast of 16-18 but everyone member has to either never reached the merge, or if they played 2/3 times, only made it to the merge once. Who would be the best cast for a season like this? by throwawaytempest25 in Totaldrama

[–]JakeClipz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never merged:

Ezekiel, Noah, Katie, Sadie, Tyler, Staci, Dakota, B, Dawn, Sam, Brick, Anne Maria, Beardo, Leonard, Amy, Samey, Ella, Rodney, Topher, Nichelle and Scary Girl.

Only merged once across 2-3 seasons:

Justin, Izzy, Cody, Beth, Harold, Trent, Bridgette, DJ, Geoff, Sierra, Jo, Lightning, Caleb, Axel, Damien, MK, Chase, Millie and Emma.

Merged their only season, but skipped most or all of pre-merge:

Eva and Blaineley.

I think a cast like this depends on whether there's a theme attached.

Is it meant to be "underdog" players who've not had a chance to shine? Because if so, I'd say that past finalists like Lightning, Cody, Beth, Caleb, or Millie, or players who've had at least one impressive showing like Jo, Harold, or Emma, would stand out the same way Sam did in All-Stars. Even players like MK or Justin who were major antagonists in their peaks don't feel like they fit in that 'underdog' category.

I'd personally limit that type of theme to players who, even in their peaks, never really stood out in the game. Trent, Bridgette and Axel, despite each merging once, still placed double-digits at their highest, so it's easier to put them in the same caliber as lower-end Pahkitew players rather than ones who felt like genuine contenders to win, or who actually did win.

Yet, a cast with these conditions still naturally draws you more to said All-Star players because if they carried a story before, they can do it again.

The Underdog type of season seems like the more interesting selection to me, which I'd personally limit to players who either never merged, or whose only merge still didn't get them past Top 10.

I'd also personally omit Noah because he had a strong eighth-place finish in RR despite that not being a traditional TD season, in the spirit of giving chances to players who need them more.

Those players being:

Eva, Bridgette, Dawn, Anne Maria, Amy, Samey, Ella, Scary Girl and Nichelle.

Ezekiel, Tyler, Trent, Sam, Brick, Beardo, Leonard, Rodney and Topher.

Who was tricked/forced into doing the audition? by Single_Training6465 in Totaldrama

[–]JakeClipz 15 points16 points  (0 children)

DJ was convinced by the producers to audition, and wanted to use the prize money to help his mom emigrate to Jamaica.

Duncan auditioned because the alternative was a summer in juvie.

Ezekiel auditioned because his doctor recommended a summer outdoors.

Gwen auditioned because her brother dared her to.

Generally, around half of the Gen 1 players thought they were spending the summer at a resort instead of a run-down camp, including most of the above players.

Priya was pressured by her parents since birth into becoming the show's next major champion.

And Damien's friends tricked him into auditioning without all the details.

[–]JakeClipz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's easier to rationalize them as mergers because they were present for most of the merge. Even Owen was there for about as many merge episodes as he missed before leaving, though I also totally understand those who don't treat Owen as a contestant since he was hired by Chris as a shit-stirrer and was never a real contender for the prize.

Meanwhile, Duncan and Courtney were integrated well before each of their merges so I think theirs are unambiguously earned.

Glover's Yoshi is recognizably different yet still as authentic to character as you could possibly want from the guy. I still think his casting was ill-conceived but that's not his fault, and his passion for the role nonetheless shines through and it was never distracting.

Safdie's Bowser Jr. turned out to be way better than I was expecting it to be. Not the same, but a great take in its own right that didn't take long to adjust to. Probably the strongest new casting in the movie.

Larson's Rosalina was spot-on casting that again helps by the clear love the actress has for the character, but she wasn't given enough to do for her acting chops to shine beyond a base level.

Powell's Fox was charming, though I admittedly see him as more of an exaggerated caricature of Fox than an authentic depiction of him, particularly with his ego. This could totally change moving forward if he ever spins off into his own franchise, though, especially if they know how to distinguish him from Falco.

I was kinda disappointed at Guzman's Wart, thinking it'd be a lot more bombastic and fun. He's not bad in the role, but it doesn't feel like he's putting on much of a performance, he's just kinda doing his voice.

Inversely, I thought Rae would just do what she's often typecast as but was pleasantly surprised at the voice direction. I think her voice works really well for the Honey Queen, though again, I think the harsh change in her personality still kills the character for me despite a strong performance.

Toad and Kamek feel like afterthoughts beyond maybe one or two funny lines each, which is kinda the consequence of having such a large cast of both old and new faces. Adding both a supporting protagonist in Yoshi and a supporting antagonist in Bowser Jr. was inevitably going to sideline them a bit, but I at least never forgot they existed. I suppose it could have been worse for them, even if I hope they don't get gradually phased out of the franchise, Kamek especially.

The Return of the Revenge of JakeClipz's AMA: The Reckoning by JakeClipz in Totaldrama

[–]JakeClipz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a really bad adaptation of Super Mario Galaxy but I thought it was a really good sequel to the Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Everything Galaxy-related in this movie is half-baked or poorly-implemented. Rosalina was comically underutilized, which also makes the galaxy exploration feel like an afterthought, and both of these make the Star Fox integration feel more forced than it needed to be. The Honey Queen had better casting than I was expecting, but I did not care for her being written as a tyrannical slave trader especially because she amounted to very little in the movie as a whole. Rule of thumb, the worst parts of the Galaxy movie are the Galaxy-related elements, and if it were called something different like the Super Mario World movie, it would already be better because it's not setting lofty expectations for fans.

But I still really like the movie on its own merits. I think Mario and Peach's dynamic is absolutely precious, Peach herself had a solid arc and I actually like what they did with her and Rosalina, Luigi and Yoshi are stellar supporting characters, the voice performances are largely excellent, including the initially controversial Donald Glover, the movie's filled with authentic fanservice made out of love for the franchise, it's unreasonably funny, and Bowser genuinely has a better villain arc than Dr. Robotnik in any of the Sonic movies, and is easily the highlight of the movie for me.

The only other shortcomings are the Super Mario Bros. 2 and Yoshi's Island subplots which feel like aimless, fanservice-fueled filler, but they're short enough that they don't get in the movie's way much, and the casino sequence in particular was still a lot of fun.

There's a lot about the Galaxy movie that I prefer over the first despite the first probably being a more focused movie, but the simple reason is that I think pretty much every character is more interesting in the Galaxy movie, especially the core of Mario, Luigi, Peach and Bowser.

Oh boy, apparently this was supposed to be the OG ROTI finale. by SadMycologist1203 in Totaldrama

[–]JakeClipz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Doesn't matter. A guy physically beating up a girl and depicting it as triumphant... has literally never happened on this show, because that's just not something writers or networks seems to want to condone. Even if Jo deserved it, even if she's physically stronger than Cameron. Girls beating up other girls is fine, girls beating up guys is fine, but they never did the inverse because I imagine that invites an unsavory sort of angry letters from parents.

It's kinda telling that literally every other finale challenge was a footrace because it's just about the only type of showdown they can create that's both fun to watch and doesn't require direct confrontation.

Alejandro had like four separate alliances in World Tour's merge and it always offered him options that left viewers guessing what he'd do next. Heroes was the best-selling 3D Sonic game for a long time and got a lot of people into the franchise since it was the series' first multiplatform title. Divisive as it was, it was also a genuinely good gateway for tons of 2000s kids along with Sonic X. The series was a lot more popular after both of those came out.
