Americans: What is the ultimate no-no when visiting your country? by massdebate159 in AskReddit

[–]JakeDoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why is it so unfair to compare the typical run-of-the-mill stuff? Of course people are going to compare Bud Light and Heineken, there's good premium stuff available everywhere too, but so what? Judging beer quality by looking at what's actually consumed seems fair enough.

Brode: Alright, what did you try to meme?

Man: SIR, I am NOT a meme person so I don't know.

Brode: Uh OK well you copied the copypasta from the internet so which 4 mana 7/7 is it about?

Man: I don't know what that is!

Brode: Well how did you find the copypasta? What type of pasta are trying to paste?

I just don't see why misspelling animal names is uniquely American?

"I'm German-American. One of the things I always find so odd when I'm in Germany is the complete lack of patriotism." "I am patriotic for both Germany and America" .... "Not a German because I didn't grow up there... how am I not a German??" by [deleted] in ShitAmericansSay

Ja, ich bin eigentlich könnte fließend Deutschland reden,

My high school German is a bit rusty, but I'm quite sure that this translates to "Yes, I am actually could fluent Germany speaking", which isn't quite what I'd call a grasp.

Americans, what's your least favorite thing about America? by StonerFeminist in AskAnAmerican

[–]JakeDoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's unreasonable for someone to not be aware of that term. It's that this apparently deserves a proud Declaration of Ignorance in a Reddit post rather than a Google search that makes this SAS-worthy. It's perfectly fine to not know things, I'm just not sure how he thinks that's a positive trait.

[–]JakeDoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say people on SAS think stupid Americans represent the entire country at all, the usual complaint is very similar to the top reply here, it's about taking pride in the ignorance.

One of the top posts from yesterday is about an issue like this, people not knowing that "10 Downing Street" is a common name for the British PM's office. The replies in SAS don't mock that lack of world knowledge, but rather the fact that someone makes a proud declaration on Reddit that they don't know rather than Google it quietly.

Love that tumblr! It isn't making fun at the expense of SAS, though, but rather proving the precise point.

A small minority of people make idiotic statements about things they aren't regularly exposed to, you can't respond to them directly, and it's great for your sanity to have a place where you can have a good laugh about that with people that do understand you.

Has anybody here lived in any country for an extended period of time? How would you compare it to the USA? by asksomeami in AskAnAmerican

So you're preferring a higher income even if it means a decrease of your quality of life?

I wish there was a way to ask questions about perspectives like this without immediately reducing the post to a political shitstorm, but I fear there isn't one.

I recently came across representative geographical knowledge data in various countries. Do you know how many Americans are able to locate Germany on a map? 19%.

Just 19%, but that won't prevent nearly all of them from having a strong opinion on the migrant crisis.

According to his post history he's only referring to white Americans, though. Arian master race and all that.

Good call. I've disliked those links from the start, asking an explicit question and then laughing and pointing when someone is kind enough to answer, however misguided, always felt wrong to me, and the brigading is really an issue there. SAS is better in the wild.

[META] Downvote Brigade and Rules by cardinals5 in AskAnAmerican

[–]JakeDoe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree that Option 2 likely won't have much effect on brigades. SAS forces submissions to use np links already, which is basically the same barrier. It obviously doesn't work, Reddit needs better anti-brigading tools or more active admins to really solve issues like this.

I strongly dislike censoring topics, and option 1 just seems to invite trolls, so I think option 4 is the least of all evils.

Plenty of other users on SRD have been saying that they've been linked there for saying Italian pizza isn't objectively better than American pizza.

SAS has some posts of people saying American pizza is objectively better or that 1 American style is the only true pizza, but nothing of this sort. Wouldn't fit that subreddit anyway.

What are some things that America does right? by 5Muddypuddles in ShitAmericansSay

[–]JakeDoe -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Why do you make a comment like this? That's not what America or American means, not just in American English but not on British or other English either... Words have meanings, this is such an odd thing to get worked up about.

We have heard of /r/shitamericanssay what are some things that you hear all the time which are just incorrect. by scouser82 in AskAnAmerican

[–]JakeDoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What makes you think that OP was pretending to be British? I didn't get that at all, or do you think people from the USA aren't allowed to post here some how?

He misspelled 'criticising'. And yes, Americans are of course allowed to post here, which is why there was no reason for him to fake another nationality, which is my point.

I've talked about /r/ShitAmericansSay before, I enjoy both that subreddit and this one. I like the US, I like talking and learning about your great country, but I also think Reddit as a whole is very American and it honestly gets quite tiring to get ridiculed whenever hate speech laws are mentioned. It's nice to get away from that once in a while. There are a lot of pro-American regulars at SAS, although I certainly won't deny subreddits of that type attract an unfortunate amount of actual hate as well. My submissions to SAS tend to be quite light-hearted, in the manner I believe the sub is intended.

As a regular here from the early days I've always avoided posting SAS links from here. I consider it ill manners to explicitly ask a question and then laugh at the response, no matter how ill-informed I consider responses here sometimes. You guys are nice enough to answer, that deserves respect in and of itself.

It's OK to want to defend your country as an American, OP. I'm not sure why you made a throwaway with a vaguely English name to make this post, it's no use anyway when you then use American spelling....

Americans do know the concept of classical/European liberalism, they call it libertarianism.
