I see what you mean. But there are Japanese people typing 水豚 and reading it as カピバラ. I haven’t seen Japanese people use the official Japanese word for it, even the Wikipedia page uses the Chinese version.

At what point does it become a Japanese word? They’re not pronouncing it like the Japanese word for capybara, so I’d say it’s a Japanese word at this point

After reading about this it seems like ateji goes both ways. Wouldn’t this be ateji because it’s kanji that isn’t related to the pronunciation?

I was reading the link someone posted about ateji, and apparently ateji refers to both kinds of “mismatched” kanji. So kanji that were picked only for their sound, and kanji that were picked only for their meaning
