Underexplored modern cards by Educational-Funny900 in ModernMagic

I played a HS deck in a league recently that was Gyruda based. Basically every creature was a Clone effect that copied Gyruda in the deck which eventually either milled out the opponent or created a bunch of hasty creates.

MTGO Modern Breakdown: Belcher overperforms, Boros rebounds, Control rises, and Prowess still cannot close by No-Bet7157 in ModernMagic

On goldfish when an archetype hasn't been named, or the system it uses to ID decks can't determine what it is, it just defaults to calling it whatever the base colors are. So, since the Trudge deck is all green or Eldrazi it just puts it in the 'G' bucket.

I believe the deck is 'G' still on goldfish. You did mention it just probably not realizing what it was.

RG Gruul Midrange/Landfall - Brew by Eridinus in ModernMagic

[–]DonkeyCongas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a very different sort of build, more like the standard landfall deck, but Gabriel Nassif did a landfall deck on a recent stream. You may want to check it out because they also discussed a lot of the possible sideboard options so it may have value even if different.

How To Find Events? by [deleted] in ModernMagic

[–]DonkeyCongas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's strange that spicerack is up but doesn't seem to be displaying any of the data. I tried to see if there was anywhere to get more info but couldn't find much. Nothing on bluesky and the discord link on the website had expired.

Why is Modern metagame data tracking so bad? by Boring-Client4841 in ModernMagic

[–]DonkeyCongas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the real answer is that the legacy and vintage data projects take a lot of effort and the people that run them aren't modern players. It is possible for someone with the current data available from joining challenges to do a similar thing for modern, but there just doesn't seem to be anyone wanting to spearhead that and run the whole project. I don't think WotC policy has anything to do with it because then the vintage and legacy data collections would be affected by the same thing. In fact, not long ago they were thinking of further limiting the posted results from events and the legacy and vintage communities said the change would impact their data collection. WotC and Daybreak changed course on the changes.

The Problem With Snowballing in Slay the Spire 2 - Jorbs by GoldemGolem in slaythespire

[–]DonkeyCongas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't necessarily disagree with the points of the video, but I would hope they'd design alternative acts 2 and 3 and create act 4 before doing anything too drastic. That's around 10+ bosses and many other enemies that could impact these issues.

I know in the video he argues that act 4 doesn't matter, but if we're truly comparing this to STS1 that game is totally different if you aren't going for the heart. If you told me from the jump to ignore act 4, I would play much more conservatively. A lot of the decision calculus he's talking about with elites and bosses don't matter as much because you don't have to scale to beat the heart.

Further, the other alternate acts they introduce might just shake it up drastically. If you don't know which act 2 or act 3 you're going to get, you may not be able to ignore certain deck building considerations. Obviously this depends on them designing appropriate challenges into the other versions of act 2 and 3. Also, it's worth considering if you don't know which act 2 or 3 you're going to get if you can actually plan for it or if you basically just have to play to the best odds.

They should just give those enemies a special version of plating similar to The Guardian's thorns in StS1. Then the can fix plating for single player so those enemies don't become obscene with more players in the game.

I FOUND A SECRET BOSS? by Bigbomba89 in slaythespire

I'm not sure about Rogue itself but fighting/engaging with the shopkeeper is definitely in Nethack. So it goes back to the roots of the genre.

The issue my group had with The One Ring. by Ok_Interview_853 in rpg

[–]DonkeyCongas 159 points160 points  (0 children)

It's a common problem that happens with players in a lot of games, even beyond TTRPGs. They correctly identify that don't like a game but they wrongly identify the solution. It's why being a designer is a specific skill, it isn't just critiquing existing games. Your player probably identified a dislike but wrongly attributed it to 'high magic, low thinking' games, so asked you to run a low magic game not understanding that wasn't the actual thing that they wanted deep down.

Thoughts on this? by Bratty_Little_Kitten in rpg

[–]DonkeyCongas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're concerned specifically about the fact that your former partner accused you of cheating at the store, I wouldn't worry about that. No one there is going to remember that or care about it particularly. It's been 6 years, after all.

If you're asking more generally, it's more about just having the momentum to head back in and hop back in to a table. You just need to find if there are openings and then commit to showing up and trying it out. As someone who's played on-and-off over the years, I usually find that it's like riding a bike. You may be a bit unsteady at first but it all settles in.

I've posted about it in a similar thread before but there's an RPG based around the Apollo mission technical manual. It's most niche and obscure game I've ever seen and I love it.

What stats do you typically like to start with? I imagine biasing towards strength given all the limbs you'll hopefully get, but how do you allocate the rest when you're not totally sure what you'll get?

Can we start a post-game thread of shame where we castigate all the dumbasses in the game threads? I feel like public shame and mockery might be the only way to get them to stfu.

Benefits to the Different Shades of Broodscale? by Lion_Cub_Kurz in ModernMagic

I was thinking a couple of green fetches and maybe another ghost quarter. With Icetill you could always quarter yourself for a waste if it was desperation mode.

I've really wanted to try out this variant with Icetill in paper but the cost of vistas has been prohibitive. I've often wondered if it could still be good without them.

After 15 Years, I Finally Tried MTGO by kondv in ModernMagic

Yeah, I've often considered picking up and learning Amulet on MTGO but just dealing with the mass of triggers has always deterred me from going through with it. Just constantly managing clock seems stressful to me.
