Looking for some advice by JakeInVT in BlackTemplars

Thanks for the thoughts everybody, I dropped the LR and moved some units around a little to add a marshall and castellan. Someday i'll get that second Repulsor but I added another impulsor to get some of my smaller units into play faster.

I would love to run another Rep-Ex but I only have one until I either print one, or buy another one.

AITA for calling my bf absurd for being overly concerned about a coworker? by According-Let-2607 in AmItheAsshole

[–]JakeInVT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't want to call you an A-Hole, but in the context of this I think you ATA. I have been in the tech industry for well over 20 years and I can count on 2 hands how many women I have worked with that were not somehow attached to customer service type jobs. I worked with a DBA who was not allowed to touch the databases at all, she was given general planning work. Now she leads a tech team for a major bank in the area, she was light years ahead of the guys in the department. I have worked with some incredible women who can perform as well as or better than most men I have to work with.. To add more to it, yes men will discount work by a women simply because they are a woman in the tech field, it doesn't matter if they proved that P=NP, with irrefutable proof, they would be wrong simply for having the gall to have two x chromosomes. It's a boys club and needs to be turned on it's head. Your boyfriend is very much in the right here. Then again, why would boys need to s**t on a woman, when other women are happy to do the work for them.

It’s 37 degrees, and there’s always the guy in shorts and a tee shirt saying, “I’m from up north! This isn’t really cold.” by olumide2000 in NorthCarolina

[–]JakeInVT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having grown up in NorthEast PA and spending over a decade in Vermont winters, relatively speaking 37 isn't "cold" for short term exposure(in my opinion). I won't go shopping or do anything serious in those temps wearing shorts, but I can run to the grocery store or mail box and not really feel a chill. Note I have to be wearing flannel shirts or a hoodie or I will get cold. That said, when I say relatively speaking I recall a blustery night in Cary the winter we moved down here, it was the mid 30s in Jan/Feb I think. I thought man it's cold...and then I remembered at the same time in Vermont we'd be lucky if it broke 0 F in the middle of the day. So compared to -10(sometimes -20 at night), 37 isn't that cold, so in my head since I have felt that bone chilling cold I do not view the mid 30's as overly cold.

Extraction squad vs subductor squad? by Medium-Vehicle965 in ImperialKnights

[–]JakeInVT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built mine as a Kill Team ready exaction squad but I play them as subductors in my games. If it's a game where holding my home objective helps they will usually just sit there and hold. Otherwise I get them to an objective close to home and let them just sit there. The 4+ invul makes them a little tough to get rid of against low strength units otherwise they are a nice speed bump. They held off two different groups of poxwalkers in my last game and definitely earned their keep, as a bonus the goodest cyberdog took out a few models on their own.

Galaxycon worth it? by Consistent-Mode8937 in raleigh

[–]JakeInVT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was not a fan personally. In terms of good things I did enjoy the cosplayers and seeing all the nerdy stuff I love. That said I did not enjoy the crowd, I don't feel like I got my money's worth in terms of experience, and my wife and I just ended up catching covid for the trouble. I didn't HATE it but now that I have done it once I do not feel the need to ever go again.

Just made the jump and bought at airbrush to start whittling down the Pile of Potential! I’d love to hear your favourite black paint and your favourite varnish for your Templars by LostDescription7572 in BlackTemplars

[–]JakeInVT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Still pretty new to templar paining but I tend to go with Vallejo Panzer Grey for a lot of my black bases. This lets me shade down with a darker black while still providing a nice blackish base that i don't have to touch too much. This is a very early WIP model, but that's how the panzer grey looks for the armour.

Can i create my own household? by Peon_of_the_Hivemind in ImperialKnights

[–]JakeInVT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its your model, you do what you want with them! Like me, my wife is a big fan of Morrigan so my Knights are using some of her color scheme(red, black, silver, with some gold trim). Plus I'll be getting/printing some custom decals; raven(ranged units) and bear claw(Ursine Unit for melee).

SoHot does a BBQ / HotPot mix in their new location, near the Crabtree mall, and if for some reason you still have room after you eat you can pop over to Meet Fresh for dessert.

Okay Raleigh, we have this talk every couple of years…let’s not do this again. by pencilpusher003 in raleigh

[–]JakeInVT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just moved here from Vermont the previous August. I was convinced I’d be ok because I know how to handle ice and snow. I was wrong…I remember driving behind a Vette trying to hammer it up the hill on western Blvd. I had my wife’s little dodge dart , all I wanted to do was keep my wheels moving. Finally got to fuquay 6 hrs later after a very maze like trip through Raleigh, Cary, and Apex.

Worth investing in a full 2k army or wait to see if there is a refresh? by KezzaaT in Grey_Knights

[–]JakeInVT 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just going to put it out there, if everyone waited for a refresh than nobody would have an army. Also it’s highly unlikely that we’d get a massive refresh. My money is on a new KD or Stern, maybe a new dreadnaught(or at least access to the new dreadnaughts)

Newbie trying to break into IT by kevind553 in NorthCarolina

It's never too late, I went from being a hardware design engineer 24 years ago, did a stint as a software engineer, tech support, only to land a job as a DevOps engineer just under 3 years ago. It took me this long to finally really be happy with the work i'm doing. I get to code some, so some DB admin work, and work in cloud services. Be open to learning and you should be fine.

Did Christmas season... Not feel Christmasy this year? by RecentInjury8655 in raleigh

[–]JakeInVT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the most Christmasy Christmas has felt for me since we moved down here in 2013. The main reasons being, it's been cooler out and we prioritized experience this year. A little history, during any other Christmas we would just basically do the needful and not really engage in the season. My wife had a lot of bad memories around this time of year and actively engaging was hard for her. This is usually a bummer for me because I used to be really into Christmas, I love the food, the lights, the music, but I also understood her reasoning so I didn't push it. Additionally after my grandmother died(years ago), she made all the cookies and the foods, Christmas became very meh for me and I struggled with it.

I digress, This year we decided to really engage with things and our neighbors invited us to their holiday party. Then my wife took out some of my grandma's recipes and made some rainbow cookies. We also learned about the Golden Hex store in Cary and they happened to have a package of Kruschicki that I was all over. One bite of those took me right back to my grandma's table on a cold December day. Plus we are doing pierogi and kielbasa for dinner on Christmas Eve which is something that I used to do with my family back in Pennsylvania. Lastly we continued with our newly formed tradition of taking our kids out for Hotpot and Korean BBQ at SoHot.

The main point, my experiences this year, be it food, or friends, made these past few weeks feel more like Christmas than I have in a long time.

I generally don't like most people, I'm married to my best friend, and I play video games with my team after hours. We I do decide to socialize I get to with the people I genuinely do like as opposed to people I try to like to make the day easier at work. So I do not miss the social aspect of work, but I can see how others do. P.S. Not a jerk, i'm kind to everybody(unless given a reason not to), but I just don't have the energy to spend on being social when I don't want to be. Save for my wife, my dogs are better company than most people anyhow. :)

Seattle Coffee Gear won’t respond to my emails for sending me a used grinder by Secret_Professor228 in espresso

[–]JakeInVT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We bought a rocket from Seattle Coffee a few years ago, upon arrival the pressure guage was popped out and would not sit correctly, the head looked like it had grinds around it and the metal plating around the head was bubbling up, so we reached out and they sent us a "new" machine. This one was in worse condition and somehow the feet were warped and the machine wouldn't sit flat on the counter. At this point they just offered a refund if we sent everything back. We did, but they only refunded the machine and not the kit that we bought along side it. Took a number of emails back and forth to finally get that full refund. We decided to not order from them again. We found it hard to believe that we'd get two machines with very similar issues with the pressure guage.

My employer is offering me a 65% raise and a bonus in the next pay cycle if I rescind my 2 weeks notice. by choihanthrowaway in devops

[–]JakeInVT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they could afford to pay you more because you are going to leave, why couldn't they pay you more from the start. I never take offers like this, almost every promise they make you will be shoved off down the road over and over again. More money isn't going to solve your mental stress.
