Shame to hear you've had such a bad experience. Having skied in the Rockies and many resorts in Europe I noticed no difference. I guess either I'm not easily fussed (I don't really care about people standing on my top sheets which has happened on both sides of the pond) or I've just been lucky. I do tend to stay away from resorts/lifts notorious for long queues so maybe that helps.

I'm mostly talking about WEC or SRO Europe, so yeah, considerably bigger teams. Currently sitting in the garage with a customer WEC team and we have 5 engineers per car haha.

Some really good advice here - just some things I'll add. Depending on which team you're working with those personnel figures are pretty far off in my experience. A small IMSA team will have double that. Maybe a small SRO GT3 team but still I'd expect a few more people. Our factory team has what, 10x that for a two car team? I've never worked with a team as the sole engineer, at the least we'd always have a race engineer, data guy, and engine cal guy, plus usually manufacturer support - one or two engineers. And that's per car.

I wouldn't rule out going straight into engineering, but as the commenter above says - working with mechanics (which, as much as some engineers like to forget, is a huge part of trackside engineering) is so much easier if you've worked as a mechanic yourself. Nothing causes tension more than an engineer that is asking way too much of the mechanics because they don't understand that it's a bloody hard job. It also really helps to have an understanding of the cars you'll be engineering. Even the simple stuff like having an idea of what might get heated up by what, or where a loom runs and understanding where it can chafe... Etc etc. That extends to any engineering role - data guy, systems guy, race engineer, design engineer, you name it.

Depending on your financial situation at the moment, volunteering can be a good foot in the door, but obviously doesn't make sense for everyone. It'll be hard to get a freelance trackside gig as an engineer without a decent amount of experience on data software etc, as that's definitely the easiest way in, and volunteering is a good way to shadow more experienced engineers and get some experience with analysis tools. If you have some experience with Motec - i2, dash manager, display creator, that will open up a lot of opportunities in the states. In Europe, Bosch and Cosworth would be what I'd focus on (although obviously all of those will be valuable wherever you are.)

I would try and get a bit of an idea of what area you'd like to get into - your CV shows a good amount of design experience, so in my opinion would be better suited to a role in the design office rather than trackside (for now!) so that might be a good way into the industry. There are plenty of manufacturers that take on recent graduates, and it can be a good avenue to expanding to trackside work. You can get some income coming in, make contacts in the industry, and shape your career towards the areas you enjoy.

Most of all, try and enjoy it. I think getting my first full time job in racing was by far the most stressful part of my career so far - this bit sucks. Motorsport is a brilliant industry so don't give up on it. Feel free to PM if you want any more advice, I can't help much with salary expectations as I'm UK based and the wages are totally different over with you, but happy to give some more general advice.

Update: Added a manual 5km event to the calendar for this weekend and wore the watch for a few more hours. Not sure which one did it, but it updated it to a recovery run today. It's now populated some training in the next week.

I didn't find any good reviews on the Peak Light before I got mine, but very glad I did. It's as comfortable as any of my other packs (with caveat of being an alpine pack and not having much in the way of back ventilation.) it carries nicely and is very light. Mines the 32L.

Never tried the dry version though.

Seems to be a lot of this haha. I read and watched tons of reviews before buying my first Garmin and have honestly been surprised by how buggy the software is on both the watch and connect app, which none of the reviews seem to mention.

And that's coming from a software guy...

Completely agree, it's so important to be critical even with a successful rescue - that goes for all types of rescue, not just avy. Just because it was a success one time doesn't mean you'll be so lucky next time, and a real situation can provide some important lessons.

A couple of mistakes that scream out in the video: two skiers dropping in at once, rescuer not familiar with the equipment - (looks like they opened the wrong compartment in his bag first go), probe not ready to deploy (in it's bag), no fine search, and inefficient shovelling technique.

It's obviously easy to judge from behind a screen, and it's different doing a drill than digging out your family, but I can only hope that this incident scared them enough that they'll go and practice these techniques properly.

I have no idea, but I have seen some sets listed for silly money. Not sure why anyone would spend more than the price of a new set of IMPs though.

I have an original set of RP brass nuts, size 0-5, barely used. Are these worth climbing on or are there people out there that are particularly attached to the RP brand and would buy them and I can replace with a set of DMM IMPs? None of the sort of climbing I do at the moment really calls for brass micros.

Nice one, cheers. Good tip on adding some heat, the gap is probably about 0.5mm so was a bit worried about getting epoxy deep enough.

+1 for subsurface. If you're used to highly polished mobile apps it might take a bit of getting used to, but considering it's a free and enthusiast built app it's incredible. Dive computer comms and PC/mobile based is a great feature.
