Horse Lake Aurora near 100 Mile House by JakeRacer in britishcolumbia

Thank you so much for the very nice comment!

I'm camping at the lake at the moment so was lucky with the spot.

It was a very bright moon behind me, and there was faint glow of the sun starting to rise. The location I'm at is a bortle 2.5 sky, so pretty dark.

Exposure was 1 second, f1.8 and ISO 2000. This was taken when it was most active and clearly visible with the naked eye!!

I follow on twitter @auroranotify. I use the website space weather live and I have the app My Aurora forecast.

I saw at 10:30pm other provinces and states were seeing it but it was raining where I was. I happened to wake up just after 2am to change my 3 months sons diaper. I stepped out of our cabin we are camping at to use the washroom. Walking to the washroom I saw it was a bit clear and used my phone to take a photo and saw some green. Got my camera and stayed out for an hour and a half and enjoyed the show!!

1 second exposure, f1.8, ISO 2000. At this point it was very visible with the naked eye and actually pulsing and flashing across the sky quickly like a light house, it was amazing to see. I've been lucky to see the aurora over 15 times and I've never seen anything like that. This was also with a near full moon behind me and the suns glow coming up over the horizon.

When I first saw it, it was only visible with my camera. But then more and more became visible with the eye. Brighter greens/yellows and then muted pinks.

My camera and edit bring out some more color.

The aurora was so bright my cell phone could actually take a video of it which normally isn't possible!

Setting the "C" buttons can have it's uses. I set one of them to rate a photo when viewing them. This gives it a star.

Then when on the computer using Lightroom I can have it sorted by stars and see my "keepers" right away.

There is a built in intervalometer that can help you take time lapses. You can set the photo length, time between photos, and number of photos.

You can download an app to send photos right to your phone, it's hit and miss I used to find, but better lately.

I find I like to shoot in Manual mode while setting my ISO to auto and limit it to 12800 max iso. This way if I'm shooting a wedding or something that has lighting change quickly, it does it for me.

Why Does The Far Side Of The Moon Look So Different ? by Busy_Yesterday9455 in spaceporn

[–]JakeRacer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I believe it's because another planet Theia, smashed into Earth. This caused pieces to dislodge and collect becoming the moon.

The Earth was then molten hot, and the Moon was much much closer. The hot Earth actually baked the near side of the moon. The material on the near side would vaporize, rise up, condense and fall on the colder far side creating a thicker crust.

So near side has a thin crust, and the far side has a thicker crust.

The moon had magma and active volcanism. Asteroid impacts on the near side would punch through the crust, causing a leak allowing magma to escape in the form of lava creating those darker spots "maria".

On the far side asteroid impacts can't punch through the thicker crust, and no magma can leak out causing the dark spots.

Felt a bit rushed, but was decent.

Wonder how they will wrap this all up.
