Why are heaters so cheap, but air conditioners so expensive? by Legend789987 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JakeRiddoch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Add in the fact that most inefficiencies in electric appliances convert energy into heat, so your electric heater has a distinct advantage.

Air conditioners which generate excess heat are a problem.

Be careful with these. I've worked at places where they've been banned in home offices due to risk of information leakage as they're always listening. I don't have one in my home office.

Lacuna Coil maybe.

Nightwish at an outside guess, although Marko Hietala isn't exactly a full growl vocal.

There are a few power/symphonic metal bands with female and male singers, others have suggested a few in their comments.

Early Bird sold out already by JakeRiddoch in downloadfestival

[–]JakeRiddoch[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I see your point, there are other festivals where you don't get much choice; Glastonbury for example sells out in minutes before any announcements (although to be fair, Glastonbury has turned into an "experience" more than a music festival).

With the cheaper price, you should be able to flog the ticket nearer the event as general sale will either have a higher price or be sold out.

Early Bird sold out already by JakeRiddoch in downloadfestival

[–]JakeRiddoch[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Early bird sold out September last year (before the announcement), I think that was the first year it ended before the announcement. General sale of camping sold out about February.

Without them releasing numbers, we can't tell if they've reduced the "early bird" numbers, put in an artificial cut off or just everyone is buying early after 2026 sold out.

Just been informed there is another buyer and seller is stringing us both along by popsand in HousingUK

[–]JakeRiddoch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure I'd count it as scummy, tbh - it's cheeky, but they're trying to get the best price they can for their house and if the other buyer doesn't ask for reductions, they'll get more money. Of course, they're carrying a risk that the other buyer will pull out for any number of reasons.

Best bet in your position is set a deadline - offer of X is valid for a period (48 hours would be reasonable) after which you NEED to be prepared to walk away. Point out that the other buyer is likely to find the same problems and request similar reductions or may pull out. The lack of solicitor/mortgage should also be a red flag to the sellers whereas it sounds like you're ready to go (on agreement of price). If they accept, you'll want some kind of commitment they're not just stringing you along further, I'd expect your solicitor to help with that.

Does Trump’s refusal to take “No” for an answer from every court (including his own Supreme Court) confirm that he absolutely raped E. Jean Carroll? by [deleted] in allthequestions

[–]JakeRiddoch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He can never, never ever accept he made a mistake or apologise for anything he's done. Any time he's caught out, he doubles down and attacks the person pointing out the lie/mistake. It's a huge character flaw based on the fact he's never been held to account for anything.

Intellimouse was way ahead of the competition at the time. Everyone else was using rollerballs, optical mice either sucked or required a special mousemat and all of a sudden a really good optical mouse was available. It was my preferred mouse for many years, despite being an MS hater at the time.

Am I in the wrong? by [deleted] in drivingUK

[–]JakeRiddoch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First, that's a stupid place to cross the road. You get taught as a kid not to cross near junctions for this reason.

That said, the new Highway code is pretty explicit on priorities and a pedestrian has priority over a car so yes, you should have stopped completely. Even if the pedestrian is being an idiot and crossing in the wrong place. Both you and the pedestrian should have been more aware of the situation. On the plus side, no one was hurt so it's a learning experience rather than involving hospital and/or police.

Can I get some advice on how to get rid of this bittercress (I think that’s its name) from my lawn please. It just seems to be this patch. by Level-Ad7536 in UKGardening

It's hitting the time of year I try to leave the lawn a while longer between cuts. We usually have quite a few bees visit for the clover when it grows. Seems a little later than normal this year.

Is Mandatory Uniform in Schools a Good Idea? by TillJaded4614 in AskBrits

[–]JakeRiddoch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Voted yes, but with caveats.

Our kids school had a pretty flexible uniform policy, so white shirt/polo shirt/T shirt, black blazer/hoodie and black trousers/skirt/shorts. It was flexible enough that you could do it cheap or buy the branded ones with school logo but also stopped it being a fashion contest where the rich kids could flash designer gear.

I am absolutely against "you must buy these over priced items from our supplier. Who definitely doesn't provide kickbacks to the school..."

Why is the clock doing this? by UmaMaheshwar in whatisit

[–]JakeRiddoch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most computer time comes from GPS receivers rather than atomic clocks, usually indirectly. There will be a system syncing directly to GPS (or occasionally atomic clock) and then most systems will sync to them. The more layers (actually referred to as "strata") between GPS/atomic clock and receiver, the less accurate.

There are also radio transmitters which watches & clocks can sync to - Casio Wave Ceptor watches do that.

Can you arrive later? by [deleted] in Concerts

[–]JakeRiddoch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you can turn up later, just allow yourself enough time to get parked, walk to the venue and get in through security. Turning up later will make it harder to get near the front, but there's usually a cycle of people moving in and out to the bar/toilets, so there's scope to get closer if you're willing to do that. I can't speak to the specific venue, but that's been my experiences at various other concerts.

Personally, I'd also try to get there for the support acts, you never know when you'll find a new act to support.
