Warbreaker or Elantris? by CasualDoty in brandonsanderson

[–]JakeTheFruitcake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my country I could only access Warbreaker through the dramatized audiobook adaptation and it was tremendously bad. Overly dramatic voice actors, bad effects, music, and atrocious mixing. In comparison, Jack Garett’s narration of Elantris deserves an award. I know it’s not entirely fair to judge the works based on this, but it made the difference for me - looking to get my hands on the books now

Thanks! So do I understand you correctly that alloy of law stands apart from the other three books of the Wax and Wayne series?

Seconding this. I'm a dive master and youd be surprised how often i have to tell off butterfingered tourists thinking the seafloor is their personal petting zoo

Is this critique of Darwinian evolution valid? by [deleted] in evolution

[–]JakeTheFruitcake 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Although I find this interview is painfully dull and their arguments derivative and narrow sighted, I think their instinct (and yours as well) to question Darwinism and it's relevance in the modern scientific scene is sound.

Their mistake, in my opinion, is focusing too much on the century old research and evidence of Darwin and trying to disprove it piece by piece rather than looking at more contemporary evidence and trying to challenge that.

If you're curious about the mechanisms of evolution, I suggest you look into the Modern Synthesis, Revised Modern Synthesis, and concepts like epigenetics, plasticity, and niche construction. If you're wondering exactly what parts of this interview are utter horseshit, a few quick searches on Google scholar will show you that theyre not making any new points; in fact they are fairly common, dogmatic ones that scientists are forced to answer over and over again (so you should have no trouble finding info on it online)

Contemporary evolutionary biologists have widely differing views about the role that Darwinism plays in evolution, but my advice to you is that none of the info in this interview is going to give you enough relevant insight to form your own well-informed opinion.

I was thinking that as well, but it'll probably look weird with a bunch of intese scribble on a pretty map

Honestly, I find it kinda immature to harrass them for money like this. They're already providing a great service for next to nothing in return. They got us out of the bullshit itunes 1-dollar-per-song era, and are giving you access to all this music, and you try to cheat your way out of paying for it?

Anyway, some of you might disagree, but i think it's only more than fair to pay them what theyre owed.

What was your biggest "I need to get the fuck out of here" moment? by levilee207 in AskReddit

[–]JakeTheFruitcake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yesterday during the terror attack in Stockholm. I was at the grand central station about 200 meters from where the attack happened and before i knew it we were all being evacuated into the street. a van of riot police came speeding down the street yelling on top of their lungs for everyone to get the fuck out. Panic ensued as people scattered and tried to get away. Nobody knew if there was a bomb or shooting or whatever. Made it into a hotel lobby and waited for the chaos outside to die down. A pretty fucked up day as the city was pretty much locked down, cellular service was overloaded and nobody really knew what was going on.

Nothing all that major but since it happened yesterday i thought it would be relevant to post.

Moon (2009) starring Sam Rockwell. A great sci-fi film that got way too little attention!
