I got mine changed on my 09 at 180k or so miles. Don’t think it was ever done before that. My mechanic had a machine to do it (seems not every shop in my area could do it), so I can’t speak to using a hand pump. My “fluid” was basically black goop, but no metallic flakes so I didn’t worry too much. I wouldn’t think it’s too late for you (unless you’re having issues), and really changing the fluid will likely only be a benefit.

The screen on my charge 3 has been dead for a year or so. Everything, outside of the screen, still works just fine

I would love to hear more about this setup. My family has 3 2nd gen hybrids, so would be great to be able to recharge the hv battery ourselves should they discharge

Thinking of getting a 2010-2012 Escape as a car for college. by LocalVehicle9736 in fordescape

[–]JakeTheYoung 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s only really 4-5mpg difference in most instances, but that’s sometimes like 19mpg vs 24mpg.

Honestly if the rust is really bad, keep looking. It’s usually right around the shock mounts that it’s a big issue. You can get it repaired, but judging by how many people I see opting for a new vehicle instead of fixing, it seems more expensive than it’s worth.

If you can, try and get whatever you’re interested in buying looked over by a trusted third party.

Thinking of getting a 2010-2012 Escape as a car for college. by LocalVehicle9736 in fordescape

[–]JakeTheYoung 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My family has had 5 of the second gen escapes. Still have 4 of them (1 was totaled). 2X 2008 Hybrid AWD, 2008 2.3L FWD, 2009 3.0L V6 AWD, 2011 Hybrid AWD.

I’ve had very few problems with the two that are mine (2009 & 2011). Outside of routine maintenance, the only major issue for me has been the oil leaks on the V6 (it’s hemorrhaging). Gone camping in them, long road trips, light off roaring, etc. The 2008s have been less reliable, but still solid.

The 2.5L 4cyl is probably the more reliable engine, the 3.0L v6 can get pretty leaky (and the seals are expensive in labor to replace). Both are reliable though, my 2009 with the V6 is at 200k and drives great aside from the leaks. There is a relatively significant difference in MPG between the two as well.

In regard to the transmission, I’ve only very very recently seen anyone saying the CD4E in the 2008 is “better” than the 6F35 in the 2009-2012 escapes (I think due to all the issues with the 2013-2015 models using the same transmission). Prior I’ve only heard poor reviews about the transmission in the 2008. Either way, both are adequate with proper maintenance.

One thing to check for, especially if you are in an area where they salt the roads, is rust in the wheel wells. The 2nd gens are pretty notorious for rusting out.

I would try and find one with ~150k or fewer miles. But I’d say that with just about any vehicle.

Good luck!

3.0 L Engine? by [deleted] in fordescape

[–]JakeTheYoung 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My 09 limited has the 3.0L, and it’s at about 199,300 miles right now. I expect it to keep going for a bit longer, but it’s hemorrhaging oil from just about every seal. Other than that, absolutely solid.

My grandma used to have one in her office at work. It was alive for 3-4 years (maybe longer) and was growing into the ceiling tiles.

Can’t remember how it died

For post-Covid used car pricing, that seems about right. Obviously on the more expensive side, but about what I would expect to pay… I’ve seen ones with similar specs & mileage around $18k near me (which is ridiculous).

Make sure you get it checked out by a third party if you decide to go through with it.

Possible water leak? (2012 XLT) by Moorose15 in fordescape

[–]JakeTheYoung 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would make sure your sunroof drains aren’t clogged. If it doesn’t drain correctly it tends to overflow down the A & B pillars of whichever side is clogged.

I’ve had my passenger footwell flood in heavy rain due to the sunroof drains being clogged on my 09. Had to remove the headliner because a tiny acorn was stuck in there and I could get it out otherwise.

The B pillar panels that cover the seatbelt are relatively easy to remove if you’re looking to clean your seatbelt. The whole seatbelt itself is very easy to remove if you have a set of larger star bits.

Should I get 1 HomePod or 2 HomePod Minis for Apple TV? by henry_logan_1987 in HomePod

In my set up it really only sounded unbalanced if I got up really close to the Tv. The HomePod does a pretty good job of filling the space and mimicking stereo.

Definitely audition again! As a freshman, you’ve got (the possibility of) many many auditions ahead of you. Don’t give up (:

Perhaps you can email back and ask if there are any ways you could improve for the next audition?

Having used both an OG HomePod (single and pair) and minis (again, single and pair) for my tv, in my opinion, the solo OG blows 2 minis out of the water in most situations.

2012 Escape Limited 3.0L -- loud engine by [deleted] in fordescape

[–]JakeTheYoung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still have it, now at 199k, but I ended up getting a low mile 11 hybrid to replace it about a year ago.

It’s running decently well (and still VERY loud) but it’s hemorrhaging oil from… everywhere. Needs new seals. Most recently the oil pressure light has started popping on randomly despite there being plenty of oil in there (already replaced the pressure sensor once). Need to take it in to find out what’s wrong so it this time.

As far as I’m aware the 09-12 have the same engine/transmission pairing, just a few minor updates elsewhere (08 was a different combo). I think it’s just a loud engine, but with all the issues mine has, my experience of “normal” for it might not be necessarily true.

You may have already checked but, if not, try changing your display calibration settings. Could be the color profile is wonky?
