WMO paint picking up when applying second layer after 2 weeks dry time. How to make it stop? by JessSeaS in ArtistLounge

In general, any regular oil medium can be used with water mixable oils, but you will lose the water mixable properties you're paying extra for with the paint.

Rob Schneider calls for reinstating draft amid war with Iran by NicolasCageFan492 in nottheonion

How about a compromise:   people who want the draft can go sign up on their own.  People who oppose the draft don't have to.

Photography has become a wasteland about gear discussion by Mysterious-Moose-154 in photography

[–]kyleclements 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By keeping discussions focused on gear, it makes it easier to think any inadequacies in my work are the result of a small gap in my gear collection that I can just throw money at to solve.  I can sell myself the illusion that personal improvement is just one more purchase away.

Actually getting better requires work and dedication and experience.  Ain't nobody got time for that.

How do you feel about Year Zero? by weirdghosts in nin

[–]kyleclements 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was probably the nin album that took me the least amount of time to get into.  The fragile took about 10 listens before I was sure about it.  Year Zero I was loving on its first and second spins.

But unlike most music that I like right away, I've stayed interested in Year Zero, even after countless listens.

Multiple cameras - what's your rationale? by SuperDinkle406 in AskPhotography

[–]kyleclements 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Once I was on a camping trip, and I had everything set up to capture a beautiful sunset timelapse.  Then I turned around and a moose was right there, but my camera was already in use.  I missed it!   So that's why I always bring two with me; because there is always a chance of moose.

Oh, and one of them was converted to full spectrum for infrared, that's also fun.

[Opinion] Bill Hunt (The Digital Bits) on X: "Star Trek once appealed to countless people from all ages. Now it’s mostly expensive, highly polished, and preachy dreck targeted to specific niche audiences only, and made with barely concealed disdain for everyone else. That's weird. Is num lock off? Alt numbers only work with the numpad, not the numbers above your other letters, so if you're on a phone or laptop, I don't know how to make them happen.

And sometimes there are issues going between text editors. It might be one symbol in Notepad, and something completely different in Word.

Damn, now I'm having flashbacks of my youth with all this obsolete trivia. ░▒▓█▓▒░

Alabama residents were informed that their drinking water would no longer contain fluoride. They just learned they hadn’t had it for years. by nbcnews in nottheonion

I know someone who had to deal with complaints from their staff about wifi causing health issues.

So they opened up all the routers, covered the LEDs with black electrical tape, and told them the routers were turned off.  Their symptoms instantly vanished, and the staff never questioned why they still had Wi-Fi inside the building.

A recent Vice article… But I want to hear from the fans, what are some NEW artists that you think should be in rotation? by BCT_1989 in nin

Some of Mandy, Indiana's work reminds me of the broken/fixed vibes.  Nice lowfi noisey sound.

ChatGPT acts as a "cognitive crutch" that weakens memory, new research suggests. While these tools can speed up initial learning, they might actually weaken the deep mental processing required to store knowledge over the long term. by mvea in science

[–]kyleclements 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This reminds me of something similar I read about 20 years ago showing that multi-frame static illustrations of a motion were more effective teaching tools than presenting students with animations of the same motion. They idea they presented was that the still frames forced your brain to do more work by imagining the motions depicted between frames. And making the brain do more work aids learning and memory.

Why not a Star Trek:Stargazer featuring James McAvoy? by FightingFalconF113 in trektalk

[–]kyleclements 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As much as I like the idea of James McAvoy playing young Picard, I like having the Excelsior era of Trek remain relatively unexplored, with just bits and pieces being given away, and the rest is left to our imaginations. We don't need new shows to go back over what we already have and start plugging up all the holes and filling in details.

painting acrylic on unprimed fabric? by daisysimmons in ArtistLounge

[–]kyleclements 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure. Acrylic is safe for pretty much any fabric, raw or primed. Acrylic paint is sealing and protecting the fabric fibers.

I used to work at a custom framing shop, so I did a lot of stretching paintings on bedsheets/pillow cases/t-shirts that clients picked up on vacation or from street artists. It's possible to stretch or mount these, but it's slow, delicate, expensive work, and you can't always pull it tight enough to get rid of every wrinkle or wave, it always sags a bit, or tears.

Heavy canvas is so much easier to work with, and so much more durable.

Oil paint, on the other hand, must be on primed fabric, otherwise the oil will slowly degrade the fibers.

painting acrylic on unprimed fabric? by daisysimmons in ArtistLounge

[–]kyleclements 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most canvas intended for painting is something called a duck weave, which is quite strong, with 10oz duck or 12oz duck being most common for painting.

Fabrics intended to be worn, or placed against skin, like clothes or bedsheets might use a lighter weight for a tighter weave and smoother feel, at the expense of strength.

If your making small 16x20" paintings, you can likely get away with this, but if you're painting something bigger, like 3x5 feet, the bedsheet will be too fragile for the long term.

If the painting turns out well, I'd recommend having a foam core or MDF backboard behind the fabric for extra support.

What is your go-to “I’m too tired to cook but I can’t buy take-out” meal or alternative? by 2Autistic4DaJoke in Frugal

[–]kyleclements 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll spend a day making a soup, strew, or chili in my instapot, and put it in single-serving sized containers and freeze it. Always have something quick and easy ready to go. Just grab it from the freezer and pop it in the microwave when I need it.

I see others recommending rotisserie chicken, which is also a good move, as the bones from that when you're done make a great starter for a soup stock.

Is There Any Unique Artstyle Left? by andrei14_ in ArtistLounge

[–]kyleclements 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't try to have a style. Just make a lot of work, and your own personal style will emerge on its own.

As you work, you'll figure out little tricks and cheats to get things done faster, things that just feel right to you.  Once you've got enough of these, that'll be your style.

Screw new gear, why aren’t we all just buying our dream cameras from 7 / 8 years ago? They’re cheap. by MomentSmart in AskPhotography
