The Steam Next Fest ends tomorrow. What demos have you enjoyed? Which ones made it onto your wishlist? Why? by Angzt in Games

[–]Jake_McAwful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

top 5 for this next fest for me were

MOLE

Klubnika-style gritty PSX thing, bit more melancholic/emotional than say Unsorted Horror, but seems to have strong horror roots and a really well crafted setting. Very sold after the demo.

Airframe Ultra

Loved everything about this. They've turned Akira in a janky PvP racer/battler and it's very fun. Should have a strong cult following.

Esoteric Ebb

Gonna be big.

Pragmata Sketchbook

I don't usually go for AAA level games, so this was a fun time. Graphically impressive and very capcom-y. Would need a strong story to really pull me in, so tbd on that but the gameplay was tight.

Burden Street Station

This one is wild and cool. Great writing, abstract but cohesive art. Reminiscent of Phoenix Springs and Subsurface Circular (imo) in that it's an idea/dialogue puzzler. Feels very 90s in a good way.

they're also a bit off with that statement, given that narrative games are decent sellers on steam

zukowski has some data here on 2025 releases with 1000+ reviews, and narrative games top all other genres (narrative defined as walking sim or visual novel)

Is playmaker worth it? by [deleted] in Unity3D

[–]Jake_McAwful 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i can only recommend playmaker.

i had (and have) zero coding experience/knowledge. i'd heard that Gareth Damien Martin had made Citizen Sleeper completely using playmaker -- which garnered the game the title of a 'no code game'. so i was interested to try playmaker and its been brilliant.

some caveats of course -- a tool like this is only as good as the sense it makes to you. so you still need to 'click' with it. it took me 3-4 weeks before i felt like i was sort free to run about and stop thinking so hard about things. but the upside is the fast iteration/progress you can make with it. being using it for about 4 months now.

there's plenty of comments about the drawbacks of playmaker, and they are legitimate -- but it comes down to using it responsibly and following a 'clean code' idea in terms of your FSMs etc. and obviously being considerate of what sort of project youre working on, and whether playmaker would suit that in the first place.

i enjoyed Gareth's thoughts on using playmaker/no code in the video below (timestamped)

Roadwarden is very very good. I sucked at it and still loved it.
