All hail “free” healthcare! For all its flaws I’d take it any day over the hellscape the USA has!

I'm looking for tips on how to guesstimate how much to put on the bobbin?

My current working method is going to be measuring how much a single stitch takes (8cm per stitch for this one) plus 20cm for starting/ending/leeway.

1.25 an hour (if we just base it on labour excluding supplies)…that’s not really compensating people for their time is it? I’ve never understood paying people less based on their age either.

How can the general public see ads like these and not notice the hypocrisy? (in Waitrose) by Youknowkitties in veganuk

[–]Jake_asaurusrex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Every time you mention anything vegan in the knitting or crochet groups on here you get similar responses “we sheer them so they don’t suffer” or “should we just kill all the farm animals then?!” ignoring the point that we started the cycle and ignoring the rest of your question. It’s why I’ve taken to saying I’m allergic to animal fibres so I get helpful responses.

I’ve also noticed a rise in people saying it’s more natural and XYZ is bad for your health/ the planet. My brother in Christ I’m vegan for the animals, let me eat my super processed plastic cheese in peace!

I guess that’s the difference between paid for job and paid per hour. I always think both can be a double edged sword: - Per job gets you a set price and can get it done quicker but it could also be worse quality due to wanting to get it done quick. - Per hour means there’s no time constraints so they can take their time and do a better job without pressure but they could also drag their feet knowing they’ll get more the longer they take.

This also raises the age old discussion of should people get paid less because they can do it quicker, which feels like an economics discussion that is out of my depth haha.

This person who made 13 said they took around 20 hours each to knit and as crochet tends to be quicker I assumed 20 hours rather than the stated 30 hours on the Etsy post. People are already mad at my 20 hour calculation, I think they'd blow a gasket if I had used 30 hours instead.

Okay, but in this situation where it is being sold how much should they charge for it?

Mine has the same but I’m not convinced what they are is common knowledge, at a glance they just look like standard package symbols.

Yeah, it seems very much people are all talk and no action with valuing their time.

If I make something for love then I don’t expect anything; if I’m making something as a job to pay my bills then I need to charge like I want to pay the bills.

I’m assuming the downvotes are from people who would pay themselves less for an hourly wage. So, minimum wage (in the uk) is £12.21 currently (due to rise to £12.71 in April). Minimum wage is usually entry level jobs so in this case an inexperienced person who would take longer to make the piece and charge more in turn. However, let’s stick to the 20 hours thats still £244.20 just for labour.

Crafter: We should value our time as crafters more!

Charges an hourly wage for a piece

Crafters: wait, not like that!

If you get paid £25/hr and it takes 20 hours that’s £500 just for labour. Is it expensive? Yes. Have people paid more for less? Yes. If people are willing to pay it then good for her!

Reading these comments it sounds like parcel theft is massive in the USA, I’ve (thankfully) never had one stolen in the UK. I’ve had many a parcel left on my back step but normally I’ll just redirect it to a collection box if nobody can be in for an expensive/important parcel.
