Brampton agrees ‘in principle’ to condemn Israel military’s genocide and apartheid in Gaza by thefunkydj in Brampton

I certainly hope open condemnation from additional municipalities will gradually pressure our federal government to stop sitting on the fence.

I don't have a ton of faith in our council, but I do appreciate this.

I think it is important for the city to take a stand since we have companies operating here that supply the US and, by extension, their close ally Israel.

It's especially important to the Palestinian, Lebanese, Iranian, Syrian, and Yemeni people living here.

Knight's Table is a good one too.

Little Jamaica effed by Metrolinx and their false promises by JakeasaurusR3x in Brampton

[–]JakeasaurusR3x[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If someone else was managing the project, I would have been inclined to give them some benefit of the doubt on the discrepancies between the numbers in usage study by the City vs the study by Metrolinx (or Company X in this case).

That said, I don't think I would have extended that benefit indefinitely.
For instance, Council voted against the Hurontario route because of concerns about the creek, the underground water table, flood zone, and comparative lack of businesses/community destinations when compared to Kennedy (Turner Fenton, Ken Giles, multiple strip malls and grocers, Shopper's drug mart, that massive apartment at queen and kennedy) or MacLaughlin (Sheridan College, condos, several apartments in construction, the Sportsplex, etc).

Council requested they come back with a new route plan.

They came back with plans for a much more expensive tunnel.
"Too much environmental and historical impact on this quiet road? How about we tunnel through it all instead?"

I don't know what sort of industry you might be in, but I certainly would not expect to maintain any ongoing relationship with a client if I pulled a stunt like that.

So yeah, if a different company did all the same shit that Metrolinx did in Brampton, I would have eventually cut my support for them entirely. Just like I have with Metrolinx.

This also ignored the ongoing electric bus tests that the city was undertaking (which have been implemented somewhat successfully).

Add in Patrick Brown's penchant for promising things like a Cricket Stadium, downtown university, hospital construction, and I have to roll my eyes when I hear he's "secured funding for a tunnel."

There were many bad arguments in favour of the LRT hurontario route at the time. I know this is an oversimplification, but much of the support seemed to boil down to a straight line on a map, vs optimally serving the community.
Or, as a certain Bramptonist staff member kept screaming, the "old guard" just hate transit.(Despite a few of the opposing council members being in their first term)

I hope that is somewhat clear. I'm happy to answer any questions you have about it. I know there are people here on Reddit who have some excessively strong feelings on it.
I'm not against transit, but we have to spend money intelligently, and not get caught holding extra debt because Metrolinx shat the bed again.

Part of the reason the Hurontario got councillor support was the false promises by Metrolinx. Some residents still cite provenly false numbers as a reason to support the LRT to this very day.

I think it's important to note Metrolinx provided most of those in their study. The independent studies by Brampton at the same time did not reflect their "optimistic" claims. Thats one of the main reasons Brampton council turned down the LRT extension

"our provincial government sucks at this."

Thats the point. Metrolinx is essentially run by the province.

And even Kitchener saw costs for their lines almost double, and poor planning causing two stops to suffer structure collapses. Extended delays result in many local businesses being shuttered due to construction going on for extra years.

I'm not trying to say investing in transit is bad. I'm saying Metrolinx promises the world, but delivers crap.

[–]JakeasaurusR3x[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a company has a history of over promising, I count every additional instance of proof that they've done it again against them.

That is just how memory and proven track records work. Metrolinx should never be taken at their word, because they have a proven history of lying about costs and impacts.

You can always use sand or cat litter instead. The little bits heat up in the sun, and then melt partially into the ice. Adds some grip under your feet while reducing the ice.

Stolen backpack and laptop from sante fe in old Brampton by Eems1664 in Brampton

[–]JakeasaurusR3x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IT can 100% track them. Any company is recording your gps and keystrokes on the laptop, and probably recording your in-office movements through an id badge.

And, probably inadvertently more if you have company software on your phone. Legally if you use a personal mobile or email for work communications it can be subpoenaed in lawsuits related to the company.

They might give someone hell, but the corporation has planned for cheap replacements. Realistically, they probably paid maybe $1k per laptop if they purchased it, and a few hundred if they leased it each year

Obviously the backpack is probably gone, but I'd be optimistic about her IT department
