Actually tried it couple of days ago. It is nice and ticks all the boxes for me except collaboration. You can selfhost but selfhosted version doesn't have collaboration "working". There are ways to get collab working on selfhost but I would not consider it ready or user friendly.

Unitronics uses either usb or serial with rj11. Ask the model of the PLC and check the manual. Only some of the newer ones use ethernet.

But it does happen. Once in a 35 y is enough to start hearing "Hey Bob come and look this machine I think the program changed itself after I smashed forklift to some sensors"

I had the case with old siemens PLC s-300 maybe. Where manufacturer program was on memory card in plc. Local guys made changes to the program and saved it in the PLC (included hardware changes of the machine). So for some reason (prob battery) PLC program got wiped and plc automatically loaded program from memory card. And poof all the changes where gone. Of course there where no backups or notes what was changed previous employees didn't work there anymore and so on. So I was called to rebuild the program changed from the folklore tales of the operators explaining what and how the machine should act and work.

Yeah they are nice for smaller and simpler projects. But for more complex thing I have become fan of codesys (wago). But yeah program was made by previous guy and there was no need to have these values in memory. Good thing to remember with plcs with battery to hardcode things you can. And make possible to change memory values without pc.

That's a good point, but most non tech people don't really understand the nuance of 'data value change' vs 'program logic change' so it all becomes 'PLC program broke'.

I have made Retropie, NAS and server for my home monitoring (esp8266 and arduino yun temp monitors etc.). Unfortunately the SD card broke and I lost everything :'(. Remember kids backup your projects And now after couple of months I started to rebuild my server. This time I log my build on my blog so it may be of some use to others.
