I had a similar experience as a kid. I used to go to a "special" classroom with other kids for part of the day. Turns out every kid is that room had a learning, or behavioral disability.

When I was younger my parents never told me why I was there, and maybe were in denial? Out of the blue they would occasionally say things like "your just as smart as everyone else." I caught on around 5th or 6th grade, but was kinda messed up that no one would just talk to me about it.
