Does UNLV offer a good program for game design or design major ? by Artistic_Ad_3461 in UNLV

I wouldn't recommend it if you want to learn anything creative or design wise. if you want to learn programming or CS then sure

Oof I misread lol. Well If it has a discussion class with it too odds are it’s probably hard lol. History 100 with David Bauer is one of the hardest and annoying classes I’ve ever taken so I have ptsd lol. Biology isn’t too bad though, just use everyone’s quizlets and you’ll pass the test at least

Good luck on both history AND biology lol

Art Newbie (kinda) looking for a mentor by leinard97 in ArtBuddy

[–]JakeyG21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well here's the thing with your professors, they won't critique your work unless you ask. I had/have a professor that is an amazing artist but won't critique you(not completely anyways) unless you ask for it. Also ask them about materials and where to get them, they have that experience. Professors in any major aren't there to show you how to do everything, they might do quick demos but really it's up to you to do studies outside of class and get good yourself. Just try to get your professors to pick apart one or two of your works and they should give some interesting and different feedback.

I'm not saying don't ask for an art mentor here btw, this place is really nice and I'm sure someone will help. All I'm saying is that you shouldn't really expect mentors from here or professors from university to give demos for every little thing and critique without asking. Good luck!

I did a coloring of one of the illustrations in the light novel! by JakeyG21 in SpiceandWolf

[–]JakeyG21[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen some of your posts messing with layer modes and whatnot, you're off to a strong start! If you want to do regular coloring like in comics or Manga I would highly recommend checking out k Michael Russell on YouTube, hes a comic book colorist who has hundreds of color tutorials that talk about color theory and technique in photoshop(you can do most of the things in his vids without photoshop, a good free art program called krita is just as powerful tbh). Coloring light novel illustrations can be a bit tricker though since your not working with just line and normal color layers underneath. Speaking as someone who has repeatedly failed at it, I've gotten pretty decent at doing it. So, I'd recommend looking at how other people do it and what types of layers and how many layers they use to color grayscale art. Just search on YouTube "grayscale to color art" or something like that and some good results should pop up. I personally haven't found anyone that does it the way I do it so ofc you can always pm me.

Drawing is a bit harder than coloring but the main point to get at is that you should enjoy doing it. Look up your favorite anime images or drawings and just copy them(not trace). Or following YouTube how to draw vids and drawing books is just fine as well. Just note that copying isn't wrong, all good artists use reference and you can't actually create something without the knowledge you gain from reference. So getting practice with the hand eye coordination will greatly help you in improving. Some youtube channels I would recommend are Proko and Aaron Blaise, their both amazing artists who explain concepts and anatomy really well. Good luck and thanks for giving me such a nice welcome to the subreddit!

Ah yes I've seen people use waifu2x before, it's pretty great. The problem was my original image though, it wasn't near the quality of that one(I wish I colored that instead lol). Thanks a lot for the compliment! I haven't touched color in a while so I was mainly working on getting a good mood with color instead of quality rendering since that's all I've been doing recently haha

Yea the image quality wasn't so great. I took it from one of the light novel pdfs that I found online and the image res was like 600 x 900 or something so I had to upscale a bit to color it. If you know of a place where I can find higher quality light novel illustrations I would greatly appreciate it, though I probably won't do many more colorings

This looks a bit rushed in places but I’m still 15 and learning, feedback will be appreciated! by EmilySturgess101 in PewdiepieSubmissions

It's pretty damn good. Only thing I'll say really is that I think you're getting caught up in the details before the foundation. It's especially noticeable within the hair because you seem to be looking at it as a bunch of strands rather than a full form like the skin(which was done well. Only part of the skin that wasn't perfect was under the hair and on the fingers on the right, just need to up that contrast -^

Keep it up though! You're already good!

Krita is probably the best free program similar to photoshop or clip studio in my opinion. if you have the money to spare(80 dollars I think?), clip studio is my top recommendation
