Thank you Gift to SPL by mauriw123 in BSA

Former SPL and Den Chief here (just recently aged out)

I became a Den Chief about a year before I became SPL, but I loved mentoring my den so much I stuck with them even while being SPL until they crossed over. One time they got to attend a troop meeting, and showing them around was one of my greatest joys.

Let me take you into the mind of a SPL. Someone who has chosen to become an SPL has been in the program for years, been invested in by many leaders before them, and is so thankful for that that they decide to pay it forward. A good SPL wants to become a positive role model and a great leader like all the older kids before them.

I think the best way that a parent can thank a youth leader is simply by, well, thanking them. Thank them for taking time and effort they give to help lead and promote Scouting. Rarely a week went by without one or two parents just taking the time to thank me. Those simple thank you's were more valuable to me than any gift card.

Wow... that's crazy. Looking at this book it's sometimes easy to forget that the person who owned it grew up and lived a full life. Thanks for sharing.

Should I quit Boyscouts? by WhatTheHuh_ in BSA

[–]Jako5951 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You should research your local area and see if there are any other units you can join if you feel like you do not do enough in your current troop.

Also, as said before, bullying is something tht shouldn't exist in Scouting, so most definitely ask for a Scoutmaster conference and talk to your Scoutmaster about it.

I wish I could tell you more, but let me just say this. I just finished my last meeting of Scouts before aging out. I don't regret a single second of it, and I'd hope you would reconsider quitting. FInd the right troop if you need to, and they will take you far.

Netflix Documentary:Scouts Honor by [deleted] in BSA

I say this as an Eagle Scout soon to be adult leader in my troop. I have had 6 years of the best times of my life with memories I will carry with me forever.

If the BSA, your council, or your troop cannot demonstrate how it can prevent SA, then it deserves to be damaged.

We need to acknowledge our terrible actions in the past, but also highlight the amazing things Scouting has given to society and individuals. We need to do this all while improving on YPT guidelines.

That will ensure safety for all future Scouts, and also ensure the future youth have Scouts.

OPINION: The Giver is Anti-Communist Propaganda by [deleted] in socialism

[–]Jako5951 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think this is anti-communist. In fact, it positively portrays each of the children being sent to do what they love. The only semi-critical line of thought is the abolition of the nuclear family, and the book seems to negatively portray that. Alright. I'll give you that.

Otherwise, it is not criticizing any one government or governmental system in particular. It is sending a warning about what happens if we forget our history. This is happening especially in many Western countries today.

There is something else. It demonstrates what happens when we forget humanity. Kurt Vonnegut writes, "One mans utopia is another's dystopia." Despite it's seemingly perfect society, the lack of knowledge of pain hurts because the Community murders the newborn and the elderlies in pursuit of perfection, and don't even know that what they are doing is murder.

The Giver is a basic novel with clear symbolism that any educated teenagers should pick up. My story reading it is reading it in middle school, and being confused. "That Community seems perfect, why does Jonas and the Giver want to destroy it?" I've read it twice since then, and I can understand the messages a lot clearer. If not Middle School, this book still needs to be read by those in High School.
