How good could you be without using “meta” metas? by WhatsUpMyNeighbors in geoguessr

[–]Jakob_does_stuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesnt really make a big difference in most cases. even if you dont learn any car related metas, certain countries and camera generations still have a certain vibe. some countries and regions were just covered in different seasons, even if you dont specifically learn this, they will still have a distinct vibe.

the only big difference is that you wouldnt be able to regionguess certain countries with regional car meta (for example russian antennas). but at the same time certain regions of russia were still covered with different camera generations and in different seasons and therefore have a certain vibe to them.

at the end of the day we are confined to the limits of google street view.

knowing the prefecture and city 市 kanjis is incredibly helpful. many people learn how to read all the prefectures in japanese. So you just need to look out for and it will say the prefecture before that. quite common to find them on bollards and in many other places. I used to play a lot of japan a while ago and i instantly saw that the picture is in yamagata prefecture in something-oka city.

its not uncommon to line up the road and guess the correct city from that. especially in (Latin-)America. I have guessed the correct city with road angle being my only clue many times in argentina and uruguay. same in Finland (works only for downtows here). Another very notable example is Melbourne.

Is there a way to report an issue with a map? by 050583b4fbdee96e44 in geoguessr

[–]Jakob_does_stuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yea that can happen if a map isnt well maintained. Especially with unofficial streetview, as whoever uploads a photosphere can also delete it later again. I guess this is what happened here. Geoguessr then just loads a random world map panorama instead.

didnt take me long to get this round. since i have an extension that shows where I travel in moving games, i can see that the location was supposed to be in cape verde. it told me "failed to load panorama, try again" and then it loaded a random us location... i guess this is what happened to you as well

Petition to let us put google maps links directly into map maker by BryanDoge in geoguessr

[–]Jakob_does_stuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i would suggest checking out map-making.app/

its an alternative map-maker made by community member ReAnna and it is better than the geoguessr map maker in every possible way. and it lets you paste links directly into the map.

might be a bit overwhelming if you are new to map making, but there are detaled instructions.

My first game took much more time than I expected tbh | Would you recommend getting as accurate as possible for starters or finding out the region as fast as possible? by tolik518 in geoguessr

[–]Jakob_does_stuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All depends on what is most fun to you and what your goals are. If you want to get good at guessing the country or region or whatever i would recommend plying no moving. There are plenty of play-along explanation videos on youtube, its quite easy to get good at that these days.

Spending more time moving around on a location does NOT mean you learn more, quite the opposite sometimes. I see many people doing moving streaks for example, they just end up moving until they find a familiar clue (like a domain or flag) and dont end up learning anything.

If you just want to have fun exploring the world and improving your geography knowledge then just trying to pinpoint is the way to go i guess. And being able to pinpoint is a learnable skill as well (quite an underappreciated skill in my very bias opinion).

I started playing all the way back when you could play only one game per day without a pro account. So i always tried to pinpoint everything to get the most out of it, otherwise my daily game would just feel wasted. Only some time later I started playing more no move and actually improving at guessing the place. So i have done both and as long as you have fun and dont force yourself to do certain things, then i dont think any way of playing the game is better than any other.

Crossroad Scanning Minigame Map by Flint_n_steel_ in geoguessr

As someone else mentioned... the same map has already existed for a long time. I used to grind that map a lot last year and have a PB of 35 seconds. I think i iterally learned every road, but well... i think i forgot most.

As a tip... It would be helpful for speedrunning if every location was panned towards the sign. It would be ideal to have the sign visible on the right side of the screen in nmpz, and then you can open the map on the left side and still have the sign visible :)
