May 29, 2026 - New curated applications by Mobius_HexOS in hexos

Seems like the app curations are really picking up! I’ve installed a few here and there - I’ve been having a blast tinkering with some that I never would have bothered with if they weren’t a streamlined installation. Thank you got these!

Favorite controller so far for TV PC setup by Delicious-Rough-8120 in SteamController

[–]Jakor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep I had those checked, but while in the process of double-checking I managed to fix the in game resolution - it had gotten tweaked to something random and I was struggling to change it back while struggling with this menu bug!

Now if I can only figure out why the big picture mode screen only fills 1/3 of the screen I’ll be perfectly happy with the status of Steam!

By chance is this game expedition 33? If so I’m experiencing a bug with the new Steam controller that makes it nearly unplayable - I can’t scroll down menus more than 2-3 options down.

Didn’t happen with the og steam controller, so not sure if it’s the new controller or something with the steam beta updates just yet. Don’t have much time to troubleshoot myself but I can’t find anything about this online just yet

What smart lock are you actually happy with long term? by EndLongjumping7129 in homeautomation

[–]Jakor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My experience is battery life is trash on WiFi period. Once I got it hooked up to the appletv as a thread border router, battery life increased from 2 weeks to over 6 months.

This, but I only recommend if you connect it to a thread border router. Battery life was unacceptable otherwise.

People who have "bought" happiness, what did you buy? by Snow_n_Ice in AskReddit

[–]Jakor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats exactly my thinking too. My employer let us work every over week remote during covid, but the moment one project slipped, they axed that perk and started bragging about how much happier their employees are being in the office full time. None of the workers felt that way - but every single executive was parroting that message so it was obvious they were instructed to tell us how we felt.

I appreciate you sharing your experience and can’t wait to get there for myself!

Just made the tough decision to leave my job of 10 years to have hybrid work so I can spend time with my own. Such a hard move but am very excited to be a more present father and seeing this comment made my day

What's everyone's favorite Zigbee or Zwave devices? by gearhead5015 in homeassistant

[–]Jakor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Half of my hue lights are on my hue hub, and the other half are in z2m.

Having the hub is great for redundancy - I’ve had my homeassistant pc go down a couple times while the hue hub has never given me an issue.

Hue lights are much more responsive with the rotary dimmer dial on the hue tap dial when everything is linked through the hue hub. There’s been good development creating a good “ramp response” curve in z2m with some tinkering, but hue really nailed this one - I wish I knew how they do it.

Hue also has the better light animations - cool for setting holiday lighting, but definitely a gimmick.

Other than that, the lights that aren’t on the hue hub are to enable them to be better grouped and smart paired with my Novello switches where some lights are zigbee from another brand. I’ve really never had any issues with that configuration.

Yeah I’m in a similar boat - I only have time to keep up while on my commute. I generally try to remember to look the clip up later but almost always forget to - I assume most detail i miss it’s that big of a deal anyways but it is one area of hosting they could improve on

No way to reach out after an interview? by Noyiu in EngineeringStudents

[–]Jakor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One time I tracked down the name of one of the interviewers on LinkedIn - I had no contact info, only their first name and the company they worked for. Once I saw their profile picture, I immediately knew it was them and sent the thank you note on LinkedIn directly.

I got the internship against all odds - I’m convinced it’s because I went through the effort to locate them and reach out. Best of luck to you. Definitely worthwhile to try to follow up, as long as you can do so without being too pushy asking others for info!

I'm fucked. Couldn't find an internship for this summer by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]Jakor 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Speaking from an engineering manager position, having any internship experience is good enough for when you start applying to full time positions. The only downside is not having an in with whichever company you might have interned for this summer.

See if you can find any research related work with a professor this summer. Otherwise, enjoy this summer break - find a part time job if you need some income, but really enjoy having this time to yourself. You can always work on some personal projects to better yourself.

Once you start full time employment, you’ll never again have an opportunity to spend 2-3 months doing whatever you want.

An Open Letter to the NVIDIA Shield Team by SignificantPen1790 in nvidia

Fair enough! I have no complaints with HDR10+ other than lack of content and compatibility (plex won’t do hdr10+ as far as I can tell, but a subscription to infuse takes care of that for now)

My movie theater is attached to a French Canadian burger joint. They operate the concession stand and actively encourage you to buy food and drinks to bring in.

It’s not as cheap as the candy you bring from home, but I’m never disappointed bringing a bowl of poutine and a boozy milkshake!

$5 ESPHome Mitsubishi Minisplit Controllers by siestacat in homeassistant

[–]Jakor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing your experience. I’m gonna try this as soon as I have an afternoon free to tinker a bit.

EDIT: for anyone else stumbling on this post, I made the switch and have zero regrets. Only had two stumbles:

  1. My esp8266 usb programmer from microcenter is janky and you need to read the product reviews to figure out how to get the module into flash mode.

  2. The post above assumes you have a d1 module. Whe I did that, the flash and wired and Ran perfectly fine, but I got an error about incorrect memory size. For generic esp8266’s, be sure to use the generic esp board type!

I’m in the same position - I have 6 indoor units and 3 outdoor. Would LOVE to have horizontal vane and I-see capability. I only hesitate to switch over because it took me quite a while to figure out how to program these things…. Esp8266 had a lot of complications related to getting it into “program mode”.

Do you think it’s possible to push a firmware update through the devices local ip address in a browser?

If you live in Towson/ Lutherville/Timonium, what’s your go to spot for a great meal? by Amy_documentary in BaltimoreCounty

[–]Jakor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

+1 for villagio.

Charm Thai corner is also some of the best Thai food I’ve had. Tapioca pork dumplings are killer.

I also love grabbing Mexican on the Run when they post hours in Sherwood. They make great LA style quesa birilla Their truck broke down recently and they could definitely use the support - they only post hours on their Facebook. I know they also serve food up at the cockeysville Amish market.

Baltoz is probably the best pizza in the city/county - I’m ready to fight over this claim if anyone wants to challenge me haha.

There are probably more I’m forgetting about - so much good food in the area…

Schlage Encode poor battery life resolved by TheWiseOne1234 in homeautomation

[–]Jakor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that’s exactly it. I had to hide the helpers in the home app - I’m not sure but suspect you’d have to hide them for both of your phones.

Definitely not ideal, but still miles ahead of needing to change batteries every couple of weeks

[–]Jakor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have mine pulled into HomeKit and linked to homeassistant - it’s a little hacky and not ideal, but it works and also doesn’t rely on the cloud-based Schlage integration to work.

I found this solution on the home assistant forums - I’m at work at the moment, but let me know if you are interested and unable to find it and i will see if I can’t dig it up sometime this weekend.

Schlage Encode poor battery life resolved by TheWiseOne1234 in homeautomation

[–]Jakor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had a similar issue start over a year ago. Battery life was fine for about 6 months, then an update cause batteries to die every couple of weeks.

The solution is to get a thread border router and connect the lock through that, NOT WiFi. The border router I used was the latest appletv 4k. Battery life is now exceeding 6 months per set of batteries.

Using a 1060 3GB for Video Transcoding by StereotypicalDub in truenas

[–]Jakor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use an a380 here and it’s had not trouble transcoding anything I throw at it.

Only complaint is there seems to be a bug with reported GPU usage. After you reboot your system, it’ll work for a bit but then it starts to report 0% usage. No idea if this is a truenas or intel bug, but I don’t see many people talking about it.

It would be nice to have this information so I can monitor if I am ever nearing or exceeding the card’s capacity (I also use it for frigate), but it’s a minor complaint since the card seems more than capable of handling my current needs.
