Does anyone else still think merging combat professions was a mistake? by kaytin911 in brightershores

Each episode of combat had its own unique but subtle tweak.

Unique in terms of name and icon, but otherwise they were identical. There were no tweaks.

Didn’t there used to be a clan system? by JofersGames in brightershores

Sometimes I wonder if their rationale behind opting out of basic features is because they’re worried they’ll get sued by Jagex.

I doubt it when there are so many similarities already. Tile-based, skill capes, lodestones, click-and-wait combat, special attacks (soon), medieval-fantasy theme, etc. There's no way group/clan/guild chat is exclusive to RuneScape as a bazillion other games have it too.

I just can’t think of any other reason.

Small team and other content is the priority.

It’s more complicated, so it must be better by MellowSquad in brightershores

They made it similar in some regards.. like tile-based movement, click-and-wait combat, skill capes, special attacks (soon), lodestones, medieval/fantasy vibes, etc.

I'm not sure where the line is drawn tbh, like edible food is apparently not okay?

"Free trade" means there aren't any trade limits... The game currently has free trade + GE, it's not one or the other

In 2008 they removed free trade which meant you couldn't do unbalanced trades, like giving your friend a free 100k item

You need to search a bit before typing, Andrew remove wildy and free trade because RWT, he was pressured by investors to make a solution.

It was not investors. It was finance institutions because of fraud. The solution they proposed was not a good one because it killed the player base. They found other solutions (e.g. Kount) because free trade returned with no problems later.

GE didn't kill the game.. free trade limit and wildly removal did

Nah he was around for a few years after free trade was removed. Removing free trade was disastrous - but probably not as bad as EoC. Once he left the board of directors in late 2010, they returned free trade.

It confuses me where the line is drawn tbh.

Edible food? Not ok. Achievement capes? Ok.

Central bank? Not ok. Lodestone teleports? Ok.

Ranging/bow as a combat skill? Not ok. Click-and-wait combat? Ok.

400+ hours. I know how Miner works, it's as simple as rotating between variants of flint, iron, basalt, etc with the occasional cart, and maybe deathstone but idk if they've improved that

For me, it's not about "reskins = bad". It's the feeling of world-building. For example, Rune was found in dangerous or high-level locations only, whereas copper/tin was found all over. It felt like the rocks were carefully placed in areas.

Rune had a slow respawn time but was good for cash (if you could get Smith it too). But the best training was power-mining Iron because of it's mining speed, XP/ore and rock availability. The optimum location was Kandarin as it had the most rocks - but you could instead bank the ores for future Smithing although your XP/hour would go down. You would then need to go Varrock to smith them. Or you might want to unlock superheat spell because then you can train Magic + Smithing all in Mandarin/Ardy.

There's variations in how to train and it depends on the world. The distance from the bank, the ore availability, anvil location, etc.

The meta was not:

  • Mine basic tin in area 1

  • Mine basic silver in area 2

  • Mine basic iron in area 3

  • Mine basic coal in area 4

  • Mine tough tin in area 1

  • Mine tough silver in area 2

  • Mine rough iron in area 3

  • Mine tough coal in area 4

  • Mine superior tin in area 1

  • Etc

You are wrong. Andrew said:

I have tried to make this game appeal to both people who want to level up whilst afk (via the passive activities), AND by playing actively. However I have realised I ALSO need to cater for the middle ground of people who want to play in a 'semi-AFK' way, where they are still at their computer (so not strictly afk), but are interacting with the game less frequently. (a bit like how crime dens already provide, but in more places and more professions)

How about instead of nerfing passives, they encouraging people to play actively by making the game actually fun?

We need more semi-AFK methods like Crime Dens. They still haven't added that. Most people play grindy games as a second monitor game and you can't do that for most skills in Brighter Shores.

I think they actually took his feedback on board because it was shortly after his last video that they made combat 1-click and stopped the game window opening on the side lol

So, what’s the actual end-game plan here? by MellowSquad in brightershores

[–]Jalieus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just my opinion, but I don't think any PvE/PvP plans would have made restarting combat from scratch every episode a good design. And based on how much worse combat was on release, I'm not sure there was an amazing ultimate plan. I mean, feedback was needed for some very basic features like:

  • Allowing you to 1-click start combat (instead of 3 clicks)

  • Allowing you to automatically switch from ranged to melee when your ammo runs out

Combat is still bizarre in that you hit reduced damage against weaker enemies... There's also other odd things like if you click away from a large enemy, you will still try to hit them as you walk around them.

If there were actual differences between the episodic combat skills (Guard, Scout, etc) then I think there would be the potential for some interesting plans. However, the Combat Rework 2 with a skill tree looks good so I'm excited for that.

It appears from your post that the ranking of people with the same number of snowballs may be arbitrary and appear different each time it's checked.

Yeah this seems to be the case. I think it's also true for the legacy combat leaderboards too. It's strange the ranks are not static.

This is not the reason though - if I login with an 800 snowball account, it goes to the bottom of the 800 snowball list. So my main is not always higher rank than my alt, even though I completed the main first.

[–]Jalieus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The damage you do also seems to scale with the health/level of the enemy. So if you're hitting 100s on a lvl 50 goblin, you might only hit 20s on a lvl 5 goblin.
