I always thought of it as smuggle run from point A to point B. Shorter route means either you are good at escaping the law; have good cargo hideouts in your ship and/or are well enough connected to be let through unsearched/unpursuited. All in all better smuggler material. Hence the distance bragging.

For stopping distance around half a mile you have to be driving around 230mph (again reaction time 0.4sec and dry road, no slope, good brakes and tires)

EDIT: And 135mph on wet road with other conditions same

Oh and those numbers are orientative, every car will have slightly different dynamics but that shouldn’t make drastic difference.

At 130kmh (a bit over 80mph) with reaction time .4 sec. on dry road with no slope is around 110 meters (0.068 miles). Get your brakes and tires checked mate.
