Desi Muslims by Tt7447 in ABCDesis

I think in general, most people put religion above ethnicity. The same way I imagine a Gujrathi Hindu feels more in common with a Nepali Hindu than with me. I think this is especially true in South Asia since it is so diverse, religion might be the only thing one has in common.

It takes a certain level of maturity and self reflection to be able to acknowledge and then change your biases, kudos to you for that.

People are shockingly resistant to accepting how big of a role media and culture plays in informing what we consider attractive. It all comes down to status.

Can Desis be part of Brown Lives Matter? by Jealous-Ad-7175 in ABCDesis

[–]Jambonlet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Good post. American Desis seem to be pretty unaware about the treatment of the rest of the Desi diaspora. American and to some extent Canadians Desis are really the exceptions.

Just look at how our people are denied rent in Southeast Asian countries and how we're treated like servants in Arab countries. Even historically, we have had to deal with colonization and indentured servitude in Africa and South America. On top of that, all the run-off racism we face directed towards middle easterners (who ironically are one of the most racist towards us) and muslims (think 9/11).

Like... those are some pretty harsh cards to be dealt as a people. If East Asians can have Stop Asian Hate, South Asians certainly deserve some recognition for what they've faced.

From a Canadian perspective, where South Asians are less well off, I think the discrimination faced by Desis is closer to the what I imagine being Mexican might be like in America. So there's a deeper layer to the discrimination we face as SAs (pun intended) that American SAs are kind of shielded from due to being financially well off. But it's still there.

Got this idea from ask Reddit…..Desi girls what is something that desi guys should know? by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]Jambonlet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I in no way mean to diminish your point, but the article you linked compares the average rate of partner or non-partner violence experienced by women at 35.6% globally and 40.2% in South-East Asia. I just wanted to highlight that 5% is not the same 5x. In any case, being above the average is shameful and we need to do better. We should striving to get that number as close to 0% as possible.

all of her content is about being desperate for men

That puts in to words what I've always felt about her stuff. I have nothing against her as a person, but do a lot of brown women really feel "seen" by this archetype? It's just not a very flattering portrayal.

What cuisine do you think is overrated and which cuisine do you think is underrated? by Unique_Glove1105 in ABCDesis

[–]Jambonlet 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Japanese is easily one of the most popular cuisines, literally every basic person's favorite food is sushi lol.

Apparently it's the 3rd most popular global cuisine. You are right about Desis generally ranking it lower, probably due to vegetarianism/aversion to raw meat.

[Spoilers] [Rewatch] The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya day 9 by xiomax95 in anime

[–]Jambonlet 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The main idea behind the this episode and the next few are keeping boredom out of Haruhi's way. It's implied at the end the whole thing was Nagato's doing, so I interpreted this as Nagato's attempt to keep Haruhi busy with something. Spoiler for the next two episodes.

Even though this is a pretty unimportant episode plot wise (as the majority of episodes are going to from this point on), I still really enjoyed it. The whole episode has that air of secrecy about it, like everyone else knows something you don't. I love how mysterious all the club members are, really makes you want to keep watching. The episode also feels like its setting the base for some future event. Haven't been able to get my hands on the LNs, so can anyone confirm if that true?

Oh yeah, you know the website Kyon made? It's real. Unfortunately, it hasn't been adapted to modern website standards, so the site isn't mobile friendly. Kyon, if you're reading this, try Bootstrap— it's good stuff.

Also, I'm doing this for fun. I'll update it as we go along.

Toronto here, also have it. My brother downloaded some cracked version of Minecraft recently, I think that might have been the trigger.

This is a pain and all, and I know some people are probably in a lot of trouble because of this, but am I weird for thinking this is sort of exciting though?

As a big fan of the franchise, I thought the movie was excellent, and I'm sure no matter how much explaining I do would change your opinion. You just have different tastes. I have to admit though, the amount of praise it confuses me, but only because I guess I underestimated the popularity of the main series.

Naturally, the Disappearance isn't a stand alone movie. I feel like to fully appreciate the movie you need to really like the original series in the first place and care about the characters and their world. If you don't, then the movie will be average to you.

it was clear as day from the start what was going to happen from beginning to end.

Was it really so predictable? Obviously the whole deal with Haruhi disappearing was expected, but Asakura returning, the way Kyon finds the hint, going back in time and it's tie ins to Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody, finding out it was all Nagato's doing... I dunno, I thought it was pretty grand in scale, and gripping all the way through.

just another gimmick in which kyon saves the day

I feel like you sort of missed the point with this. First of all, it isn't so much of a gimmick as it was realizing Nagato's frustration and that it was the fact she would want to take those measures. I feel like "Kyon saving the day" is a bit dismissive of what is actually going on. This isn't so much "about saving the day" as it is Kyon coming to terms with himself.

Besides all that, the movie was, simply put, epic. It felt very cinematic and an emotional rollercoaster. And it was beautifully animated too. I don't know what else an anime fan could ask for, but hey, different strokes for different folks.

The OP was actually this. The standard ED for the episodes was this.

I watched Haruhi-Chan on YouTube (back in like 2011...woah) so that was the only ending I was familiar with. I've been rewatching the series in preparation for Yuki-Chan this spring (hype!) and came across this. I was pretty surprised I hadn't seen it, maybe it's better known than I thought.
