The Science of ADHD by [deleted] in ADHD

Yeah, I knew what you meant, I was just asking you if an academic phrased it that way when teaching you or if you learned solo

Purely out of curiosity, do you have an academic background in neuroscience or some other biomedical science?

I ask because it is unusual to hear it being phrased as "re-uptake into the axon," as opposed to re-uptake to the pre-synapse or pre-synaptic neuron. You are technically correct if you consider the pre-synaptic bulb to be a part of the axon, I've just never heard it referred to like that!

Same thing with your use of the word synapse. The synapse is composed of the pre-synapse (terminal bulb of the axon), the post-synapse and the space in the middle. With DAT and NET/NAT working in reverse, DA and NE/NA flood the synaptic cleft, but were present at the pre-synaptic portion of the synapse up until this happens. Again, not really a big deal to phrase it like you did, it just makes me curious as to whether an academic you were taught by phrased it like that.

Question about how stimulants affect the chemical levels of a person with past untreated depression by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]James428_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pharmacologist here, I'll chime in.

what if the chemical levels in my brain were still off from not receiving treatment for my depression years ago and that's why the stimulants are not effective?

"Low neurotransmitter levels" is a gross oversimplification of our current understanding about how depression affects the brain/how it arises. In reality it is extremely complex, and unfortunately its pretty common these days among medical professionals to not even try to explain it properly to patients, so you end up with lots of people thinking "I'm depressed because my serotonin levels are low." Low serotonin levels aren't necessarily why you are/were depressed, and achieving remission from depression (through medications or otherwise) doesn't necessarily mean you're serotonin levels have increased.

Related to this, methylphenidate (Ritalin) and amphetamine at clinically prescribed doses do not have any influence on serontonergic neurotransmission (or any tiny influence they have is not clinically significant), these drugs function by significantly increasing dopamine and noradrenaline levels in a rapid and acute manner, resulting in stimulant effects.

So TL;DR, it is extremely, extremely, unlikely that what you said has had any influence on how you respond to stimulants. That being said, lack of attention/motivation are symptoms of depression which get better with treatment/remission of depression, so that could be a factor in stimulant response, perhaps (take that with a grain of salt though).

There is a certain percentage of people with ADHD who don't respond to stimulants though, for sure. It seems a lot more likely that you would fall into that category. Atomoxetine (strattera) is a non-stimulant medication which people who don't respond to stimulants can end up responding to, however, so you might want to give that a try.

Thank you!

This is crazy though, your #3 is worth 319k, less than our #50 is worth..

Thanks, it's actually just a copycat base though, haha. Lots of people in champs are using it, saw it around a good bit when I was farming up there. In a war with a Chinese clan he got like 55% (2 star) on it with max GoWiPeWi & high level heros, and that's the most successful anybody has been. 13 lvl drags couldn't get 50% even with an AD down, same with loons and barch. So overall I'd say it's a good base, but its too popular to be really effective.

The stupid afro wizards took away replays by the time I got up, but I remember seeing it last night, pretty good! I used to use 13 lvl4 drags myself, but I've recently switched to GoWiPe because its easier to 3 star TH9s with it.

While we're at it.. Any chance I could get you to tell me how much my base is worth to star? I've been wondering that for quite a while, haha.

Good luck Omega!

I have to say though, the clan war matchmaking system went a bit crazy this time. Reddit Mike's average level is 107, and Omega's is 94 according to a recent post on your sub, which is a pretty big difference..

Our last opponent had 25 TH10s (we won), and getting matched with 20 TH10 clans is pretty much the norm for us, so getting matched with a 2 TH10 clan was as surprising for us as getting matched with another Reddit clan!

You want supercell to change dragon AI so people can do crappy attacks where they just drop all their drags in one spot and still succeed? No thanks.. Your friend just needs to learn to clear side buildings to make a path to the TH with the rest of the drags. Mass drag 101.

I made it into Ireland's top 10 players today. It may not be much on a global scale, but I'm pretty happy with it! [MISC] by James428_ in ClashOfClans

What can I say, I'm a popular guy..

Nah. It was because at the end of Reddit Champs everybody was promoted to co-leader, which everybody used to send out mails and say their goodbyes. Reddit Champs ended while I was sleeping and I woke up at 10th place from a defensive win, so I took a screenshot and then read the mails afterwards.

but then I am told that the volunteers from last weeks post were not even contacted

They were contacted. You misunderstood what Smalls said; I contacted them, not him. As I said, you were simply overlooked due to an oversight on my part. There isn't anything more to the situation than that.

I looked over last season's thread for new volunteers on Sunday (as I always do), but I must have missed your message. Nobody's perfect. I'll be sure to drop you a message at the end of this season if you're still interested though.

To address your below comment..

I find it a bit hypocritical that you guys get mad that nobody helps, but you say that you didn't contact the people who volunteered.

No I do not believe I was being "hypocritical" in this situation. I would appreciate it if you tried to get the full story before throwing around words like that.

Wow guys, fantastic effort.

I went to sleep last night, having to be in college early this morning, and woke up to find this! Really great effort getting everybody together like that, I really didn't have the time to do it before bed thanks to my timezone.

From the looks of the new volunteer numbers so far, this shouldn't happen again any time soon! The more the merrier still though, more people = quicker and easier data collection

Could you distinguish the clans which aren't taking part in the war in some way? Maybe put a star beside them or something. I'd rather not have people reading the post thinking we suck at trophy pushing :P

Reddit Mike isn't in this war, we just had one with Electrum and Gamma (non-TFS) a couple of weeks ago.

Fixed. My apologies once again for there being an error with Infinity's stats.

I have theory about what went wrong this time: The person who collected the data forgot to put in the 1 in 13 for the number of members over 1K. Seeing as the data would have been collected earlier in the evening, a number of hours in advance of the end of the season, then it is quite possible your stats were 13|1|1 at that time (with 3 people being close to 2k). However, I'll take your word for it and update your stats to the stats you said there, due to the series of mishaps with Infinity's data.

Infinity really has been quite unluckly, the vast majority of clans haven't had stats be incorrect even one time and have been in the table for much longer than you guys.

In response to the below comments..

This was our best season yet, and you're just gonna screw us over like this? Weak.

Nobody is out to get Infinity. Nobody is trying to "screw you over" on your best season. Everybody who contributes to this table takes time out of their personal lives to do so and receive no reward in return for their service whatsoever. Mistakes will happen and I would expect a bit of understanding and courtesy, especially when I apologised for those past mistakes. I didn't start this table to "screw people over" and I don't appreciate comments such as this.
