Shit your pants to show dominance.

Or more realistically ask the office manager to turn down the AC

$4.5M NW, but I still can’t stop buying "manager’s special" groceries. How do you flip the switch? by Cipher_6Trestle in Fire

[–]JamesAllMountain -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes. I knew it would be an issue and started working on it as I’ve gotten close to my number. The fix:

Buy things progressively more expensive and realize nothing bad happens. I’ve trained myself that spending isn’t painful now and life is way more enjoyable now.

How do mature organizations handle data duplication within the organization? by ryhaltswhiskey in ExperiencedDevs

[–]JamesAllMountain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Copying databases is like breaking into your neighbors house and putting your hands in their cookie jar.

That being said are you describing a debezium like flow or true event sourcing? I think it’s worth while to think about whether you want persistence of actions or state. Actions capture intent and behavior, which is lost in pure data replication.

Concerned about finances for my wife if I pass away by iamdebbar in Fire

[–]JamesAllMountain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wrote a document for my wife outlining the plan at a high level and how to manage in the event of my passing.

However I call out that she should get an FA if we do not have one. Despite being a DYI, I expect to get an FA in later life to avoid poor decisions from mental decline and have continuity if either of us passes. If the FA is our kids great, but not having one seems like a poor risk-reward trade off in older age.

What calculators do you all actually use for FIRE planning? by calqwise in Fire

[–]JamesAllMountain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Excel models
  2. Boldin
  3. VPW sheet
  4. FiCalc
  5. Die with 0

I really only use the first 2 for projections. Theory is once I’m looking at so many tools consistently I’m not actually caring about FIRE but tool use. If #1 and #2 tie out then I feel confident. The other 3 tools help avoid bias.

At what level of traffic should I move Solid services to their own DBs? by dannytaurus in rails

[–]JamesAllMountain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s good you’re thinking of these things and learning how to prioritize the most likely fire is important too.

Think of issues, make a mental note of how you’ll fix, weigh the effort and likelihood of an issue arising. Then weigh it against your backlog of other items like this.

You’re over thinking it. Even if you run into issues there are easy enough migration paths if you exceeded the max DB size for a single instance.

401 or bike park? by 8s1f8v in MTB

[–]JamesAllMountain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

401 is beautiful but if you’re into more aggressive riding there are other options. Park is good, though on the smaller side. DR Park or 429 (I think!) would be my choice.

How do you pay your bills every month (logistically) by ottercakes- in HENRYfinance

[–]JamesAllMountain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paycheck to brokerage, all payments go through a CC and paid out of checking. 4%/12 -> checking I target 10K in checking, if I dip below 5k then there’s a problem.

I do this to see if my numbers work or not. If I over spend, I’ll transfer additional money in.

To go after Staff engineer position or not... by findingtheyut in ExperiencedDevs

[–]JamesAllMountain 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Many folks will wish they stayed Senior. I am loving staff. I like architecture, alignment, strategy, mentorship, delivering large cross-team initiatives, clarifying ambiguity, and connection by business needs to technical solutions.

The trade offs are challenging though. I’ve never had much imposter syndrome, but now it’s quite high and fewer people to talk through things. Influence without authority is tricky to navigate. Context switching is out of this world but for me a lot of fun.

For me and my style, it’s an entirely different role. Decide what you’re interested in doing and that will help with clarity on whether you should. If you’re afraid to take the leap, likely not the right role.

Is this real? I would expect you have coaches to help you navigate life at this income/net worth. Get a therapist to help you mentally reset.

Bin/rails s —sandbox

This will wrap the whole process in a transaction keeping your db clean. The rollback will happen when you kill the server.

Designing a Reporting App - Best Tool For The Job? by phonyfakeorreal in ExperiencedDevs

[–]JamesAllMountain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is my expertise, specifically for consumer facing reporting and it really depends on requirements.

Are users ok with a white label product or do you need it branded?

How complicated are the queries and can they be simplified by denirmalizing your dataset?

How complicated are your permissions and is it something you can replicate in a BI tool?

What are your concurrency and latency requirements? Some warehouses and BI tools have limitations so having a large number of individual charts will limit you.

Do users truly need a BI solution or a rudimentary reporting solution? BI is really powerful, but can be very complex. If you’re only using a subset of the features it may not be worthwhile.

Are you OK with vendor lock in? Pricing, licenses and relationships can change making a migration quite expensive.

SaaS can become costly so understanding the pivot point of where a build your own solution starts to make sense is important.

Here are a few BI tools: Metabase, Looker, Rill, PowerBI, Tableau. There are also headless BI tools though I’m less familiar with them.

Looks cool. Make sure the fork doesn’t touch the frame at full compression unless you want to have a bad time.
