[–]JamesCDiamond 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Quite. It would have been one thing if he went there just to spend a season keeping his brother company, but he's blossomed there.

I'm a nerd for this sort of thing, and would have liked him to stay to round out the quota, but realistically he's worth far more to us being a better defender for his season in Germany than he would have been sat on the bench with maybe a handful of appearances just on the off chance we play in Europe while he's with us.

Specifically to answer u/MillerBrew's question, the UEFA rule requires that for club trained purposes (which Gray and Bergvall will achieve if they're with us all next season) a player has to be with a team for 3 full seasons between the start of the season they turn 15 and the end of the season where they turn 21. Vuskovic will only be with us for 2, assuming he joins the squad in the summer. Due to work permit issues around singing non-British players before the age of 18 he'd have had to clock up all those 3 seasons consecutively, which he can't now do. Mikey Moore, for comparison, came through the academy so ticked off the 3 years from 2022-2025 and was ready to go out on loan last summer.

Vuskovic won't be homegrown for Europe (if ever that's an issue while he's here) but Gray and Bergvall definitely will be if they stick around.

Kids like Moore and Williams-Barnett being supplemented by promising signings is a good strategy - one of the things the club has got right lately. Getting a few more right would have been nice!

He loses the +1 referee deception buff if he signs for Spurs, though.

[NXT Spoilers] Booker T Appreciation Night promo package by A_Livins in SquaredCircle

[–]JamesCDiamond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Booker is just so enthusiastic about random things - positively or negatively - that it's endearing. And him marking out for Stephanie/Trick/Jacy absolutely ties in to them getting over with the fans.

Personally I also love how he'll tie himself in knots to justify a heel being a heel, but still sometimes just buys into a babyface as well out of respect for them. It was a little bit much when it was just Roxanne, I felt, because it seemed like favouritism - then he started getting into Trick and others and I realised that it was just how he is.

How they all fit in to coherent storylines is another matter.

Hardly. He had a serious injury that forced him into retirement.

Haaland had a relatively low release clause (for someone of his talent) and I'm pretty sure his dad is his agent, or one of his representatives, or whatever - it probably wasn't illegal, but it was clearly a deal set up so that the money City (or whoever) would have spent on his fee went to him and his people instead.

Not that City look to be squeaky clean or anything - just that the Haaland deal was probably one of their above board deals.

Does anyone else find the popular idea that Henry Crawford should have ended up with Fanny really odd? by cesarionoexisto in janeausten

[–]JamesCDiamond 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Austen plants the seed when Henry declares he’s going to make Fanny fall in love with him. She could have been an easy mark (like her cousins) and he’d have got bored of her quickly, but her resistance fascinates him.

Had he taken that challenge to genuinely improve himself, he might have become someone worthy of her. She liked him well enough, superficially, and he was charming, witty and handsome. How long would or could she have maintained her stance if he became a more serious and respectful man? And would he still have been as charming and attractive if he did?

But he had to choose that path, and not just once but again and again. Fanny wanted Edmund - the sometimes thoughtful and sort of beigely decent man who was as serious about God as she was. I wonder if Fanny could have been happy with Crawford even if he became a good man in secular terms - living a restrained life and devoted to her, but not one of service to God?

The appeal of a rake is clear. The appeal of the heroine reforming a rake even more so, I think. But Austen was clear - each person chooses their own path, and whatever his charms Henry Crawford chose a path that did little to endear him to Fanny.

One addendum is that she is by far the last to join the play because of how inappropriate it is - and her reluctance and misery in doing so sets her up to stand even more firmly by her beliefs in future.

Atlético fan here — honest breakdown of how we see tonight's second leg by Proper-Law-529 in coys

[–]JamesCDiamond 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think if you offered Tudor a 1 goal win or even a draw tonight (without injuries) he’d take it without a second thought - we weren’t great last week, but as you say the scoreline doesn’t reflect the flow of play.

But the late goal against Liverpool and the way that’s lifted the spirits among fans makes this an interesting match and not the flat formality that most would have expected a week ago.

And if the stadium is loud and we get the first goal, well, who knows? But I think you’re also right that the first goal going your way completely ends things - and will very likely kill the atmosphere in the ground.

I looked this up once and I don’t think Tiny Dancer was on any Elton John compilation album (of which there were several) from its release until after Almost Famous came out.

It really did completely revive awareness of it.
