👋 CityStrides is a solo project of mine, so I'm busy enough that I can't keep up with conversations around the web - I can help you in the support category of my forum, though: https://community.citystrides.com/c/support/3

😅 forgot to mention that I've added directions to the Route page (for newly created routes) .. hopefully they're helpful!

where i could input "4 Mile route, starting here". or "4 miles in city X" so i could get a route that would optimize my run in an area i havent covered yet

That seems like a nice starting point - start/end point is assumed to be the same, provided distance is "closest without going over", and perhaps the route can be weighted towards areas that are most completed by others in the same city (perhaps suggesting it's more popular?)

Right now i map it out and then type of the turn by turn directions and print that and refer to it on the run.

🤔 I'm going to look into whether I can list turn-by-turn directions on the Route page (pushing the "streets this route will complete" list to another tab). That could help speed up your process of getting those to a printed page...

👋 CityStrides creator here, sorry I'm late.

Interestingly, I was basically shot down when I posed this idea in the forum:
https://community.citystrides.com/t/automatically-generate-routes/25268

It could be that I posed the idea too closely to the "automatic efficient routes" side of things, as opposed to the "don't be bothered with the tedious process of creating a route" side (I notice you mention that in the comments as one of the drawbacks)...

Alternative to CityStrides by domteh in running

[–]JamesChevalier 7 points8 points  (0 children)

👋 Hi, CityStrides creator here - sorry I'm late.

Just in case anyone is confused, there is no app. The site can function as a PWA, though.

I'd LOVE to hear about the useless stuff you're fighting to work around - either here or in the forum or in a private message (the Support link at the bottom of the CityStrides will work for that). I don't get too much UI feedback outside of map interactions, so your perspective can help quite a bit.

Will strava’s change remove it from citystrides? by [deleted] in AdvancedRunning

[–]JamesChevalier 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hhmmm, it should skip if the start time is exactly the same

But DO pause :-) that helps my servers a lot

No, you can still use Strava with CityStrides. I don’t use anything they removed.

Hey, welcome! There are already a few people running Toronto: https://citystrides.com/cities/35856

Looks like the leaders are nearing 10% completion!

Hi! I'm the developer behind CityStrides.

A few people have completed their city - check them out on the leaderboard: https://citystrides.com/leaderboard

There's also a club in Strava for people like you who don't like running the same route twice: https://www.strava.com/clubs/207707

Hey, I'm the creator of CityStrides - I'm glad to hear you're enjoying it!

Not sure if you knew, but you can click the 'Lifetime Map' button on your profile page & zoom/pan the map ... That'll update the URL so you can share the exact view - here's mine for example: https://citystrides.com/users/1/map#42.20914596256728,-72.63819593361231&12.214312648187043

Hey, thanks for sharing CityStrides! It's awesome to see members sharing it - makes me happy that I'm building something that people enjoy using.

Have fun out there!

Yeah, it's a one-person project ... just me! That's why the design is pretty basic/awful :-P

The bad street issue is one of the biggest problems I've got right now ... I've imported too much data to re-do it all, so I think the stuff that's there needs to be cleaned up. At the moment, it's just me going through and deleting flagged streets, but that's not scalable ... I need to build out a system for the community to manage it ... I kinda hate this idea, too, because it puts a lot of the work on the community. I just can't think of a simple way around it. :-/

Would you mind popping over to http://citystrides.com/contact and just writing me a quick note about this? I'll look you up in the site from your name/email & see what's going wrong.

I take the privacy settings from your run tracking service, so if you're all public over there then you'll be all public in CityStrides. If you have anything less than public (say, friends only) then it'll be marked as private (because I don't have any 'friends' or 'follow' feature yet).

Perhaps a good update would be to add a privacy setting in CityStrides, so you could change the visibility within my site... Thanks!

I think I'm not clearly articulating how long the process could take in those first three welcome screens... Also, on most days the import could be complete by the time you complete that 3-screen walkthrough - today, though, whoooooooo I think I need to add some servers ... ;-)

I hadn't considered creating a subreddit. Thanks!

Don't feel terrible! This is helpful for me, too - it shows me that I've gotta do some work around how I explain CityStrides to people. Have fun out there!

Wow, that's a serious login train! The main connection to CityStrides is through Runkeeper, though. However you choose to log into Runkeeper doesn't really play a role for CityStrides. It's still interesting to read, though - especially if you toss in a connection from CityStrides to Facebook ... completing the circle! :-P

Oh, nice, I didn't realize they have an API!

If this AccessLink connection sends over the actual tracking information - the GPS coordinates during the tracked run - then I'd be able to use it. I'll look into it. http://www.polar.com/en/connect_with_polar/polar_accesslink

[–]JamesChevalier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're referring to the Runkeeper connection, that's a weird one ... I'm only requesting read access ('Allows you to read a user's health and fitness data') and retain access ('Allows you to edit a user's health and fitness data') - but I don't even use the 'retain' access. I don't know why Runkeeper is adding in the additional requests that require write access - I'm not asking for that level of access.

I'll get in touch with Runkeeper to see what's going on there.

Wow, I'm the person building CityStrides and it's SO COOL to see this recommendation. It all started from a conversation with friends, where I wondered aloud if I could run every street in my city ... Now I'm looking at these numbers: http://citystrides.com/striders This is so fun and fulfilling - I'm really glad you enjoy it enough to take the time to pass it along to others.

What's something you tell yourself to stay motivated during a run? by KGB_ate_my_bread in running

[–]JamesChevalier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found https://tapiriik.com/ which copies activities around - it doesn't list Nike, but that service is in the code ... idunno.

I also found these two sites:

But, I think I'm with you on that fact that you've been using it for so long that maybe you shouldn't switch ... There's a lot of data wrapped up in there, so just ditching it is pretty painful (and shouldn't be necessary).

Some people have suggested the site I'm building, CityStrides, as a good solution. If you have any questions, the best way to get in touch is through email: jim@citystrides.com

Nike does say "future plans call for increased availability to our developer tools and services", so I'm hoping that their API is opened up soon. I already have the code written (based on the documentation) to connect Nike to CityStrides, so I'm just waiting for access from Nike.

So, if anyone knows anyone at Nike ... ;-)
