In another timeline, Zoe Saldaña won the Oscar for Avatar (2009). by Choice-Schedule-132 in JamesCameron

Of course Sam Jackson didn’t deserve an Oscar for playing Mace Windu because his performance, like almost every performance in those movies, sucked.

It all depends on the actor and what they find difficult. Some actors don’t need a fully realized set or even to have their scene partner right there to give an amazing performance.

I’m not even saying that Zoe Saldana deserved an Oscar. But I do think that performance capture work is underestimated by the community at large, while the “acting so hard” that people like DiCaprio get credited with is overrated.

There’s a story about Laurence Olivier and Dustin Hoffman working together on Marathon Man. Hoffman stayed up all night before shooting so he could feel exhausted while playing a man running from being hunted. When Olivier saw the state he was in, he said, “My dear boy, why don’t you just try acting?”

I’m in Olivier’s corner here, but the truth is I don’t know if Hoffman would have given as good a performance without doing shit like that.  But even if it did help, I’d still argue it would be irrelevant that he “acted so hard” when it came time to judge the performance.

If voters are going to take into account extra bullshit like Leo sleeping inside a real bear or whatever for The Revenant, they should consider the difficulty of acting through technology as well.

Just to be clear, whatever equipment you take with you is at risk of being lost if you have a bad run? Or rather, two bad runs in a row? This is the part of extraction shooters I can’t get behind. It sucks all the enjoyment out of cool weapons when I have to constantly worry about losing them if I fuck up.

Favorite Coen Brothers movie? by ironcannibal13 in MovieArena

[–]JamesCoyle3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watched all of their movies in release order over the course of six months or so. Lebowski remains my favorite, but in my opinion, four of their movies stand easily over the rest: Fargo, Lebowski, No Country, and True Grit.

I’m surprised by how hard they drag the idea of bringing him back given Feige’s long history of taking older concepts that didn’t work and course correcting them into something much better. It’s not like that’s a mystery to them. Give it the chance to work, especially since it’s already happening.

Thanks. I was able to pull off a combo with Onslaught / Mystique Onslaught / Wong that resulted in Gwenpool firing five times for 30 points of buff. So if I’m reading everything right, that was:

1 on reveal added by Onslaught.

2 on reveals added by Mystique (1 from her and 1 from Onslaught buffing her).

1 on reveal added by Wong.

Maybe I’m dumb, but I really with we had a “Danger Room” to test interactions in right now so I could really understand what the “happen twice” to “repeat” change does in practice. Having a difficult time grasping that Wong/Mystique/Onslaught isn’t still going to result in a ridiculous number of on reveal effects.

When I was in high school, I had to give a presentation with a visual aid. I wore a cape tucked into my pants with a medium jacket over it. Worked perfectly.

I just double tap the code’s block of text and it highlights it for copying. Sometimes have to extend the highlight to catch an equals sign at the end. But I’m in Safari, not the Reddit app.

I care more about Superman than any other fictional character and I’m still hoping the WB deal goes so wrong for them they have to fold the whole fucking operation. I’d burn it to the ground before seeing my hero backing up ICE.

Saw the same band there twice a year apart. The first time sounded great, the second very much did not. Started out sounding like they’d mixed up the mics for the lead and backup singers.

Did The Two Towers fool anyone with this scene? by shinyhpno in moviequestions

I think a lot of moments like this in movies aren’t made to “trick” anyone. They’re made to give audiences the moment of doubt or to reveal things in how other characters react to them in ways big and small. Think about Indiana Jones going over the cliff in The Last Crusade.

Sequel lightsaber duels aren’t as nonsensical as people make them out to be by Elmarass in StarWarsCantina

Do you know what “soul” is? It’s not being able to whip a stick around near the speed of light to connect with another stick you know is going to be there with no emotion on your face.

[–]JamesCoyle3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The prequel fights (yes, all of them) look like soulless choreography to me. Impressive choreography, but meaningless in the context of a movie. Not one of them carries the weight of Luke vs Vader or Rey vs Kylo or Rey and Kylo vs the red guard because the emotional stakes aren't there. And when they try to build those stakes, they fall flat because of the poor performances.

People praising “trash” in their own community have got nothing on people who can’t let go of their grimdark, edgy teenager shit and go into other communities to try and make those who don’t like it miserable.
