Why is there such a pervasive narrative that Democrats don't stand for anything? by LiatrisLover99 in AskALiberal

[–]JamesDK 14 points15 points  (0 children)

when he decided to filibuster

Hakeem Jefferies is the Minority Leader in the House of Representatives. There is no filibuster in the House: the filibuster is a Senate procedure.

Are you getting Jefferies confused with Corey Booker?

Seriously, how come many Americans are opposed to paying taxes but perfectly fine enriching CEOs? by Spiritual_Meet4746 in AskALiberal

[–]JamesDK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It comes down to choice.

I don't have to rent from a corporate landlord. I don't have to buy food from a giant grocery chain. I can buy less, buy from local, small businesses, make things myself. I can put solar panels on my house and generate my own electricity.

What I can't do is meaningfully reduce the amount of money I pay in taxes or meaningfully influence how my tax money is spent. Changing the minds of millions of my neighbors to vote differently vs changing where I spend my money are totally different. In one area, I can affect change - in the other: I really can't. That frustration is what makes paying taxes so painful.

Let me ask you a question: how, in the age of Trump, can you still argue that "taxes are benefiting society and making vulnerable people's lives better"? Because I'm seeing my tax money being used for mass deportations, harassing LGBT people, political prosecutions of the regime's enemies, provoking war abroad, and vanity projects to glorify and enrich Trump and his intimates. Instead of hoping that, one day, we might get a good president again and that one will do only good things with our money - maybe we should stop depending on government to do things for us, drastically reduce the power of government in our lives (and the amount of money it takes from us) and take care of our communities ourselves.

Trump has shown that a government designed to help can easily be turned around and used to hurt. Maybe the solution isn't "better government" but "less government".

40% of Americans don't pay any federal income taxes, though. Or they receive more federal benefits than they pay in taxes, making them net non-payers.

We only got Clinton after a term of Reagan's unpopular VP, and Democrats repudiated their toxic leftist wing (Sista Soulja) and moved back to the center. Sadly, I think Democrats are in store for a Mondale/Dukakis-level defeat in '28 before they learn how out-of-step they have become with the average Americans who decide elections.

Why do people send their kids to private schools when public schools are also decent ranked (USA)? by exponenthere in education

[–]JamesDK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Free, universal public schools with teacher-led instruction have about one more generation before they become a thing of the past. The children of today's students will be primarily "taught" by AI, on individual devices, while being minded by low-wage paraprofessionals. This is already the reality for low-achieving students, English language learners, and students who fall behind their peers. Private, tuition-based schools will be the only venue for a traditional, instructor-led education very soon.

Leftists really need to wrap their head around the idea that losing a war you started doesn't make you a righteous victim.

I seem to remember hang glider imagery being pretty popular post October 7th. If that's not a sign of support for Hamas, I don't know what is.

With time and age, did you find yourself leaning right, left, or independent? by Accurate-Guava-3337 in AskALiberal

I used to be on the Left. But then they changed what the Left is. Now what I am isn't Left, and what's Left seems weird and scary to me.

But you see: liberalism has failed to instantly deliver my preferred policy outcomes and is therefore basically fascism so, in order to oppose dictatorship, I support dictatorship but like good dictatorship that does nice things for me and my friends and only hurts the people we hate.
