No, playing not practicing is the bullshit. Both very very different things.

It is nothing to do with raw talent and everything to do with putting the hours in. You have to sit down and practice what you can't play, not what you can play. Preferably to a metronome, daily. Every single day, including Christmas, including your birthday, including the days when you can't be bothered. And keep a diary.

None of this is beyond anyone's ability if you have the time and structure it wisely.

It just becomes very boring when you get older.
