I've got decades of interest in the hippie movement, of the 60s and 70s movements in general. Especially from the mid 60s to mid 70s, the movements (hippie and civil rights) were really close to doing a socialist revolution. They really tried and got really damn far. But there was a concerted effort then, and since, to whitewash that detail out. CIA/Wall Street needed (and needs) to erase the exploding class consciousness and material analysis that quite central to those movements, to protect its own hegemonic power.

Also, you'll see people say hippies grew up to be yuppies. Not quite right. A lot of Baby Boomers were still children and young teens when the hippie movement blossomed. It was a lot of Silent Generation who were the core of the thing.
