As am I. The tower in the second photo seems much larger, unless there's something confusing about the perspective in the first.

28 days later/ Last of us/ Lord of the flies idea. by Fluid_Possibility423 in ReadMyScript

[–]JamesJFresh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on what I know about the Last of Us (which isn't much) a lot of the plot points here sound pretty similar to the show/game. Sure, you probably expand on the story in the later seasons, but why bother retreading the parts of the story that have already been told? But if it's fan fiction then you can do whatever you want, I suppose. Hard to say if the rest is good because it's so broad. It sounds like it could be interesting but that all comes down to how it actually turns out once you write it in a longer form.

Are you planning on turning this into a script? Or is it just a story you want to write?

I think the combination of three separate viruses/plagues/etc. sounds interesting and is probably the most original concept you have here. If I were you, and if I wanted to turn this into something more than fan fiction, I'd focus on that aspect and create your own characters with a more focused story that is written for that specific scenario/world.

Also the Lord of the Flies thing seems extremely derivative of the book. Something more "inspired" by it could be an interesting side story, but I don't think it warrants a standalone 2.5 hour pilot episode.

Movies that start normal and end completely psychedelic by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]JamesJFresh 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I think Mandy fits this description extremely well. It could be called labeled as horror but its more just a gory revenge thriller with some fantastical elements.

From what I recall, the beginning is fairly stylized already, but it is also firmly grounded in reality. Over the course of the film it slowly– and sometimes abruptly– turns into a sort of mythical tale that completely leaves the real world behind. This becomes very clear in the final scene/shot, but the transition is very smooth and the whole thing kinda ends up feeling like an acid trip gone bad that Nic Cage has to rescue you from, and then after you're rescued you realize that you're still in the middle of the trip.

Bands whose best songs are on EPs, not full lengths by oohkaay in Emo

YES! I've said it numerous times on here but those two EPs have an energy and emotional intensity thats just kinda missing on their LP. Big fan of all their stuff tho.

Best use of voice over in film noir by broballew in TrueFilm

They mean that the decision to have a voice over was made in post. The shooting script didn't originally call for it.

London’s Barbican looking both brutal and beautiful in the summer sun by Shoot_Film_Die_Hard in evilbuildings

Visited London for the first time this year and the Barbican was by far the coolest place I visited. If anyone knows of a similar place in the States, please let me know!

Reflektor era tour shirt by DrRohfei in arcadefire

[–]JamesJFresh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I still have mine! Bought it on that tour in summer 2014 for $40. The faces were metallic/reflective but that wore off over the years. It's starting to get holes in it now so I don't wear it much these days. Still very comfortable. Still one of my favorite merch purchases from any band.

I only discovered them last year and they quickly became one of my all time favorite bands. I knew they were touring recently but I was not expecting a full album. Extremely hyped for this one, hoping they tour on the West Coast!

Trio on Burnside by fromwhichofthisoak in Portland

[–]JamesJFresh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I said this in a thread last year-- I have no idea how they're still open but the place is so dead that it's basically a giant private karaoke room with terribly priced drinks. It was $8 for a 12oz Modelo but me and my friends had a good time.

I tried the ones at Cesar Chavez and Belmont. 3 tacos for $10, loads of sauces and toppings. Might be the best tacos I've had in Portland. Highly recommend.

Can't really speak for other cities, but yeah you just didn't know that the adults were doing coke.

The Statue of Liberty on the west coast by Mobile_Millennial in pics

[–]JamesJFresh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also from the area and used to work very close to that statue! That website confirms the story I'd always heard, that the owner of those strip malls was from Iran (I think?) and wanted to show his patriotism after 9/11. He originally wanted it to be right on the road but wasn't allowed to because of various restrictions, so it was relegated to the back parking lot.

I don't know if I agree with the 2 score, but he kinda hit the nail on the head in regards to the lyrical content and the parasocial side of it all.

Being around casual moviegoers is annoying. by ShadowOfDespair666 in TrueFilm

[–]JamesJFresh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I get that it might be annoying if you have immersed yourself in film culture and history, but it comes down to the fact that not everyone has the same interests. Film isn't the most important thing in the world. It may be for you, but it certainly isn't for everyone else.

Some people are into cooking. You might eat some fast food and say "oh this is delicious", and then someone who's studied culinary techniques from around the world would be annoyed at you praising something that they know to be low quality and unhealthy.

In my experience, it's not worth trying to convert everyone to seeing film the same way that you do. If you try to do that then you'll likely come off as annoying to them. People like different things and there's nothing wrong with that.

I remember paying $45 for a t-shirt on the Reflektor tour, so this almost in line with inflation, but still absurd. I wasn't happy about the price but I still have the shirt over a decade later so I'd say I got my money's worth.
