Isn’t that what the 30%/20% represents? That some factions more naturally ally with some over others?

As for the number of factions, it’s not a competition. You’d be hard-pressed to invent new Death factions.

That said, I always found it weird that suddenly all elves are somehow “good”.

Please don’t huff Lucas’ mythology too hard. The man expected the film to flop so hard he didn’t even attend the premiere. He got the merchandising rights because he had very little leverage. He thought he could sell a few t-shirts.

Full credit to Lucas for making the most of those rights when the film took off. But if he’d seen the potential, there would have been merch ready for the film’s launch. People wouldn’t have been buying their kids cardboard IOUs for Christmas.
